Just returned from the RIU Ocho Rios after a week spent with friends. What an amazing time we had!! Such a beautiful property. Once arriving at the airport we found the “Sunwing” guide very easily and got on the bus. It is a very long bus ride to the hotel. 2 hours with all the stops at the other hotels along the way to drop off other guests. The driver was nice and had red stripe beer available for 5$ US! Don’t buy any from the guys selling it right out of the airport because they were charging way more per beer then our bus driver was. The one downside for us was how long this transfer was but worth it if you plan to do excursions like the Duns River Falls or Blue Hole as these are located in Ocho Rios. The check in was smooth and we had rooms all in the same building and same floor. We were in building 3 and it was beautiful. The rooms were very clean and kept very clean all week by the cleaning service. The bathroom was big with a double sink allowing couples to get ready at the same time. The shower was spacious and water pressure was awesome. The grounds were breathtaking and kept very clean!! Such beautiful views. The food was amazing. We enjoyed the buffet and always found different options to try. We tried the Steakhouse, Italian & Asian A La Carte. Since they do not take reservations you show up and they will tell you how long approx the wait is and give you a buzzer to hold on to until your table was ready. These specialty restaurants opened at 630- we generally arrived for 7-730 and usually only waited 30 mins. However the steakhouse we waited closer to 1 hour and 40 mins and the guy running the tables was very disorganized. He was not keeping track of the order of people waiting for tables and it seemed like chaos. However he was in charge of not only taking names of those waiting for tables but also cleaning tables and serving guests. They did not seem to have enough staff working the Steakhouse restaurant which caused the long wait. Also the food we got from the steakhouse was NOT worth the wait. The Italian and Asian restaurants were much much better and seemed to be organized way more. The people working on the resort were LOVELY!!! We shared so many laughs with the staff. Big shout out to our favourite buffet server Seyon!!! He was so friendly and attentive and always had a big smiling face. We will miss him and his riddles he would tell us every night. Another shout out to Micheal (new bartender at pool bar), Kevonne AKA bird man, and Squid ward for your laughs and jokes!! Our crew loved you guys! The entertainment was great! Saturday is a beach party which is a ton of fun! Then on Thursday there is a foam party in the pool. There is a DJ with music every night until midnight after the show. We enjoyed the music and dancing over the shows but we are a younger crowd (twenties). We were exhausted by the time the DJ was done and ready for bed. There is no night club but this wasn’t an issue for us. I would definitely recommend doing the blue hole excursion!!! It was our favourite over Duns River by FAR! So peaceful !! And way less people as we went on a Friday and cruise ships don’t port on Fridays in Ocho Rios. We did the catermeran excursion to the Duns River our on by the Water Sport Group located on the beach of the resort. It was ok! We are glad we saw Duns River but we went in the morning on a Tuesday and it was packed!!! Very busy trying to climb the falls at that time. Overall I loved the resort!!! We want to come back! So much to do and see overall.
First let me start off by saying that my family and I travel 3 times a year and once a year to Jamaica. We always select all-inclusive resorts. The best thing about this resort is that the staff tries to be as nice as possible. There are several negatives which is why I rated this resort with terrible score. They advertise 1 buffet restaurant and 4 À la cart restaurants but this is not true. The Chinese restaurant is a buffet as well and the Italian is half buffet style. The only non buffet restaurants are the steak house and gourmet. The food is not bad but a little below average. The drinks are not stingy with the alcohol but try a shot and you will know why (Extra watered down). I have always had a glass of champagne or a Mimosa for breakfast while on vacation but not here as they charge you $20 for a cheap bottle of champagne. Now for the entertainment or lack there of entertainment. They have a kids show from 7-7:30 pm then you have to wait till 9:30 pm or later as they never seem to start on time for the main show. The shows were OK. Following the show there was a DJ that played music for one hour but to be clear they do not have a night club. The kids club opens for 2 hours then closes for 2 hours then opens for 2 hours then closes for 2 hours that is the schedule. The teens club is so unorganized that it should not be called a teens club. No video games either. I saw adults using the facility and kids (3-10) using the facility. They don’t have a basketball court or a tennis court. This is the first resort that we have stayed in that did not have sports courts. My wife and I were utterly disappointed because we love to play tennis in the morning and we could not on this vacation. They do have a 2 pool tables in the sports bar, if you want to pay to play them. I was so bored one day I convinced my wife to play pool but they were out of order. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
The upgrade is a vast improvement,.... overall the service is amazing!,
My experience at this upgraded hotel was bitter sweet. The reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the phone in my room not working. It became even more important when my son fell gravely ill and I had to leave him to go from the 4th floor to the lobby. As you can imagine I wasn’t best pleased. That aside, while my son was ill and in his room, I have to take my hat off to the staff at this hotel for their support, thoughtfulness and genuine care they showed me and my son when he fell ill. I can’t say the same for the taxi drivers, some of which seemed to try to make the most of the fact that my son was ill to charge the exorbitant amounts they did to transport us the few times we had to use them to get to hospital. The service is excellent, they will do their utmost to assist and I thank in particular the Nurse Nicola Brown, an angel sent from heaven. That lady is one of the best medical personnel, I have EVER come across, I wouldn’t be able to find space to say what she did for us, so I will simply say this... She is THE BEST NURSE IN JAMAICA.. if she comes to your room, trust her, you won’t get better! To Chef Trevor, thank you for the fish broths, you were great to us, the front desk staff who assisted with sending correspondence, the managers who arranged for the coconuts each day, the General Manager, who arranged for us to be transferred.. me and my son thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. You don’t know it, but your individual and collective actions helped to literally save my sons life and we will always be grateful to you all. There were a number of improvements made to the resort that I didn’t get to experience most of them, due to the above, but I did get a chance to see the New Years Eve dinner that was laid on, and although I didn’t get to enjoy it, it looked absolutely amazing. I’ll definitely be back another time to enjoy it. If only for the service, I highly recommend this hotel to all.
Very underrated property. It was completely refurbished but since this was our first time and we just got to see the end result, all I can say is WOW! It felt like you were in a beautiful vegas hotel minus the gambling and smoking and plus all you can eat food and drinks. A great balance of family and couple friendly at a much more affordable price. Sure they don't have room service but who cares if the weather is amazing. More reason to get out of your room and eat on the beach! We loved every minute there !!
Fantastic Jamaican Vacation
Very long, just-got-back review: In short, it was a fantastic vacation! We were a group of 3 couples, so no kid-oriented comments here. Reception: We had a fruity drink in our hand within 5 minutes of arrival. The staff was welcoming and friendly. We had no issues from checkin to checkout. Facilities: The whole resort is clean, modern and spacious. Rooms are very nice. We upgraded to a suite (celebrating our anniversary) and were thrilled with the extra bathroom space, big bathtub, long balcony, sitting area, walk-in-closet, and especially the amazing view! Our friends had standard rooms and they were very nice as well, also offering beach views. Beach and Pools: Note: we never had too much trouble finding chairs at the beach or pool. We did try to get to the beach early to save 6 together, but there always seemed to be some empty chairs anytime of day. The beach is beautiful, the sand is soft (mostly), and a few trees offer some shade if you want it. The water goes to about 6-8 feet deep within the roped-in area. Most of the water has a sandy bottom, but to the far left side there’s more seaweed–which is good for snorkeling. You’ll find more fish along the deeper areas there. The pools are also beautiful. Our group spent most afternoons in one of the two swim-up bar pools. The counters, and tables in the water were great for hanging out with a drink, enjoying the last of the sunlight. Beach Sports: We used the kayaks. Our friends used the paddle boards and catamarans. Everything was easy enough to sign out. The staff was friendly and helpful. Note: If the flag is red (too windy) they won’t let you take anything out. We had whole red flag days, so take advantage of opportunities when you have them. Food: There are four restaurants. We were there for four nights so we ate at one each evening and didn’t try the buffet for dinner. The buffet was great for breakfast and lunch. As you’d expect there are enough choices that you can always find something you like. Note: try the Jamaican Apples. They have red skin and white flesh and are juicy and delicious! Among the restaurants our group voted the Italian restaurant best. I personally enjoyed the Kulinarium the most–for the four served courses and gourmet dishes. Note: The Kulinarium doesn’t hold very many people and only has a 6:30 and 8:30 seating. If you want the early seating get there around 6pm or plan to put your name in for the later time. The Steakhouse and Asian restaurants were both good but not phenomenal. The Asian restaurant is a buffet that serves Japanese, Chinese, and Indian food–some of it quite good, but on the whole we would have rather been served 3 or 4 cohesive dishes than the random tasting of everything. Seriously though, we ate like kings and I have no complaints. Drinks: The bars have a long list of fun tropical drinks you can attempt to work your way through. Your beer choices are Red Stripe–regular or lite–that’s it. If, like me, you eventually get tired of sugary drinks try a rum with club soda. I’m usually a bourbon and soda gal, but their bourbon “Kentucky Gentleman” is awful! The dark rum, however is very tasty. The bartenders are often busy, mostly friendly, but occasionally grouchy. If you have a dollar visible when you order a round you’ll get better service, and maybe stronger drinks. Bring a bunch of dollars for tips. They deserve it. Entertainment: It was only ok. The bands/singers that play before the featured shows were very talented, but smooth jazz after a big dinner made me sleepy. The best part of the featured shows was the skilled and athletic dancers. The Michael Jackson impersonator was great! But that show was about 15 minutes too long with awkward transitions and sections that overdid it. We thoroughly enjoyed our vacation. I definitely recommend Riu Ochos Rios!
