My experience at the Sonesta
We knew going into this vacation that there was still a lot of work to be done at this resort as well as the island itself. Check in was speedy but chaotic but was able to get into our room by 2pm. We had upgraded to an ocean view room and were on the 6th floor; the view was not disappointing. Going to break this review down by pros & cons. Cons first. 1) Not enough chairs around beach or pool area. Not enough umbrellas. Macadam gets very hot. 2) Staff not where they’re supposed to be as per posted signs, especially at the towel hut. 3) No communication about events going on at the resort. Found out last day there are printed events at front desk & info on the kiosk. 4) Next to impossible to get a drink at the pool bar unless you’re hanging out & tipping all day. 5) Housekeeping poor at best. Rooms surfaced cleaned. Fridge not stocked. 6) Food leaves a lot to be desired. There is plenty but we ate a lot of pizza & food from kids corner. Breakfast & lunch at the Palms was the best. Mimosas always flowing at breakfast. 7) Resort ran out of mixers and Heineken. Blenders broken. Not all floors have ice machines. A large wedding party checked in and this was the reason for running short on alcohol? Poor preparation on part of the resort. 8) Long wait for elevators as guests and staff use same elevators. People got trapped in elevators. 9) Air conditioning shut off & had to have maintenance come 3x to get it fixed properly. Pros 1) Room keys are on your wrist, so convenient when hands full. 2) Food at the Point was decent. 3) Live entertainment was pretty decent. 4) Most of the staff were friendly, including the construction workers. Anna at the concierge desk was helpful. 5) Resort offers free shuttles to downtown and Mullet Bay. They need to advertise these facts better. 6) St. Maarten is a beautiful island. 7) You can see the progress daily. 8) Tour desk agents able to set up great excursions. Overall, my opinion is that once all the kinks are worked out, this has the potential to be a top notch resort. St. Maarten is a beautiful island and so worth the visit.
another great vacation
Aanother great vacation! I can't believe the complaints that some people post. To the people who did not like going down to the Ocean point to check in come on there's golf carts to shuttle you down but my advise is take the short walk and explore your resort. On the way you can see your pool and the new beautiful new gardens along the way. also check out the Palms Grill and the Ocean Terrace restaurants. On check in if the lineups for the elevator are long relax and have a drink or 2 at the lobby bar ( say hi to Edward great bartender). Food was good and improving all week long. Enjoy the Ascot Pub and say hi to another great bartender Paul. Thanks for the upgreated room and I can't wait to get back!
half way through a 2week stay and we cant fault a thing. Nothing is too much bother. Its a lovely way to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday well worth the trip from the UK Front desk staff all excellent bar staff excellent food is lovely. Would highly recommend this resort
Good stay. We arrived on a Sunday and 5 hour delay of our flight. Never offered anything to drink and not very good explanation of how everything works. I did put 3 reservations in for dinner and never took. When you go eat at the buffet the hostess confuses the table arrangement just let us sit. Also for such a big resort there is no service elevator for the help. It is bad enough for the amount of people staying now include the help. I know this is still rebuilding after the storm but tweak a bit or you will lose the people
My stay at the Sonesta Maho was peaceful and very comfortable. The staff was very friendly. I will definitely be back, the reviews I read before going had me nervous but I didn't experience anything negative. I would suggest that the front desk be made aware of certain things I was directed to Jings for dinner but they were not open. Other than that I had a blast
