Great staff, resort lacking
Just checked in but this is no where near what it was made out to be. There is minimal occupancy. I've only seen 2 other groups here so maybe 5 rooms being used total. They are not using the buffets because of low attendance so everything is menu order and have to wait for kitchen to cook. Staff is super nice and super helpful. On staff alone I would rate 5 stars, the best I've seen in a resort period. Thankfuly I'm resort hoping this trip and only here for 2 nights. The room is very uncomfortable. The beds are original to the 40 year old building. The bed clearly makes a curve with no one on it. You will feel the springs inside. The AC works but doesn't go below 75 I'm guessing (no thermostat). Room is very very humid because they don't have seals on the exterior room doors and the humidity gets pulled in by the AC blower. Bathroom fixtures are very dated. Have to unplug lamps to get a electrical outlet. Yes the beach and pools are beautiful but because of the lack of room comfort, will not return. They refuse to open the indoor restaurant for anything other than dinner. The outside buffet you will get attacked by birds. On day 1 of breakfast a bird crapped on me from above. Om day 2 I wanted to enjoy the quiet breakfast and beach and relax but wasn't able to because there were 5 birds that would keep landing on my table trying to take my food despite me having it covered. This place did not feel like a vacation. Other resorts hire companies to bring out big birds to scare off the small pest ones. There are other hotels on the island for the same cost that offer a higher quality room for the same price.
We go back every year! The staff is great, the hotel is always clean and the food is good. We go during off season so it is not as busy. The first time I went to El Cozumeleno was in 2001 and it has not changed much.
Low season --WONDERFUL--
This was our 3rd stay at El Cozumeleno. The last time was 11 years ago during high season. This stay was during the last week of August during the LOW SEASON. What a pleasant surprise. It seemed like we had the whole place to ourselves. The hotel was QUIET; operating at about 20% of capacity. Needless to say, the staff had all the time in the world to cater to our every need. Everyone was so friendly. As there were so few people there there were no buffets, only food off the menus. So of course the food quality was much higher. For breakfast and lunch we ate in the main dining room, and for dinner we ate in the reservation only restaurant. All food was at least good, and there were many excellent choices. Two years ago we stayed at a nearby hotel with only breakfast included, and paid MUCH MORE for less. When we stayed during HIGH season 11 years ago there was a show every night and there was an activities director on the pool deck at all times in the day. It was a raucous, cruise ship like atmosphere. This time was the opposite. It was very peaceful and calm. There was a good mix of generations. The pools had crystal clear water. In the rooms the bathrooms are adequately cleaned, although the fixtures and tile could be updated. The fixtures and tile do not have that brand new, never used look of major luxury hotel chains--you known the type. On the other hand, the hotels with much higher ratings for the room accoutrements have MUCH HIGHER PRICES to go with it. You could easily pay double. For what it is, this place is a BARGAIN and we will definitely be back: the price makes it easy to forgive any physical deficiencies. We encountered a number of families, like us that have been back many times, and one that has been going for 30 years. One of the best features of the hotel is the beach. It is a wonderful beach to swim...and snorkel. The water is clear and blue with easy visibility. Compared to 11 years ago there are actually MORE fish to see. They will swarm around you if you move your hand suggesting your are going to feed them. (The staff will give you left over bread.) Much of the beach is covered with coral sand allowing you to walk out quite a ways. To the left of the hotel, walking toward the Westin on the beach there is a beautiful rocky beach area just perfect for sunset pictures. On the right of the main hotel beach is a cement pier that serves as a good breakwater as well as a place for excursion boats to stop and pick you up. There's a good scuba diving company that has an office right at the hotel, Island Divers. You can get PADI open water certification for about $500, and 2 tank dives are about $95.oo. (You don't have to stay at the hotel to use Island Divers). This hotel, like most on Cozumel is on the West coast of Cozumel. Be very careful when comparing other locations on the Yucatan peninsula. Look up a seaweed map of the area for guidance. Consider alternatives or negotiate better prices for locations with severe involvement. The beaches facing the wrong direction can be COVERED in mounds of Sargassum seaweed. The seaweed map says moderate seaweed on Cozumel, but luckily, there was minimal seaweed at the El Coz because the beach is facing west. What little washed ashore did not affect our enjoyment. We visited Playa Del Carmen (a 1/2 hour ferryboat ride to the mainland) during this visit and were disappointed to discover that beaches facing east (from Cancun to Tulum) have been severely affected. I remember Tulum fondly as a Mayan ruin overlooking a bay with pristine, ultra blue water....no more. Location: it's about 5-10 min from the Cozumel airport and about 5-10 min from the ferry terminal. If you take a taxi from the airport you will save money by walking about 5 min away from the airport. Just stay on the same road in the same direction and you can catch a cab. I think the drivers have to pay a fee to drive all the way into the airport area, so you will save this fee if you just walk a bit farther. It is hot and seems rididulous but it works.
Nice and relaxing
Great place a bit dated in regards to beds and normal wear and tear but they keep a regular upkeeping of the site. Would return as they made our stay very accommodating. This is a very nice place! Thank you to the staff!
Good Care of their client
Rooms are old and need much love but they take good care of their clients. I got sick from eating outside and they watched over my health and refered me to a doctor. Made me some soup when it was not on the menu etc, When I lost my cell phone they help me look for it in the hotel and even outside of the hotel and they found it in a taxi. GREAT STAFF AND GREAT SERVICE. AND they got the best beach out of all the others. NO SEA WEED because they clean it off. Me and my girlfriend will be back!
