Nice first trip to St Martin
The Esmeralda was probably just what I expected it to be after doing a lot of research online of places to stay while visiting St Martin. I understood going in that they are still in the process of recovering from Hurricane Irma. The service at the hotel was excellent. Everyone was very friendly and attentive. The few small issues we had during our stay were immediately addressed. We stayed in a large suite (421). Overall the resort was nice, but it did not wow me. For the most part the room was clean, although I felt that the bathroom floor was a bit dirty in the corners and around the legs of the vanity. On the grounds of the resort we felt very safe, but we were discouraged by locals about walking to and from the village restaurants in the evenings. During the day safety was not a concern at all. We walked to Orient Beach each morning on the path from the resort property. Of the 3 restaurants currently open on the beach, we really liked "Kontiki". This is one of the places that is partnered with Esmeralda to offer free beach chairs and umbrella. The food at Kontiki was by far the best of the 3 options. Each day after a few drinks we walked down to the nude section of Orient Beach just for the experience. Orient Beach is beautiful, with a fun vibe. We were there during low season, so the crowds were small. Beach towels were provided by the hotel for a $60 deposit, we thought that was a bit extreme, but we were happy to have towels provided. The restaurant at the resort, Astrolabe, was outstanding. We ate there each morning for breakfast and 2 times for dinner. We were very impressed with both dinners. My only complain about the restaurant is they insist that you order your whole meal at once rather than allowing you to order starters first followed by entree orders after as needed.
comfortable and clean hotel on Saint Martin
Pros: - Through a tour operator we have received a good price of around EUR 160 a night; - Rooms are clean and pretty large; - We were upgraded for free to an ocean view room; Other guests have told us that President Macron has been sleeping in the same building last year; - The area is secluded and protected by a private security firm; - While the hotel and beach restaurants are quite pricey, a number of local eateries exist in the nearby town (eg Good Morning) with average French prices; - Renting a beach chair at three different places at Orient Bay beach is included; Cons: - This is not the fault of the hotel: Orient Bay beach is sadely infested by a lot of sea weed (Sargassum); the western beaches of Sint Maarten have been less affected; - US-Americans primarily stay in this place; They are quite loud; It explains also why the hotel wanted to see our credit card at check-in (everything was prepaid through a tour operator); As average Europeans we are in no need of ordering champagne at the beach and getting it charged to our room; We dont do that; We recommend the hotel to stop this credit card nonsense with their European guests;
beautifull little paradise
used to go to Riu all included but this place is destroyed so we went to esmeralda resort, the place is beautifull, kind of little cottage with private pool, the staffs are simply polite always ready to help and advised, very clean , thanks to gastien, audrey and Anne which were very nice to us. just beside a wonderfull lillte french aera with restaurants bars and grocery, very warm and friendly place.
First time in St. Martin after Hurricane Irma
Our deluxe room was very large and bright, with high ceilings and spacious closets. It had been recently renovated. The bathroom was large as well with a magnifying mirror and strong shower. The breakfast included in the room price was a basic continental, but you could order eggs and pancakes for a reasonable extra fee. They had and agreement with three beachfront bars, so you could get beach chairs and umbrellas for free. The property has access to the Orient Bay beach. We would highly recommend Esmeralda to family and friends and stay there again if we go back to St Martin.
Nice hotel and friendly staff
Hotel features a series of small individual bungalows. We recieved a complimentary upgrade when we arrived which was a nice surprise. The room was clean and spacious. Rooms also all have semi private pools. The island is still recovering from hurricane Irma meaning repairs are still taking place all around you. Orient Bay is a bit removed from the areas of cruise ships, but the beaches are beautiful.
