Great family vacation!

I've waited over a week before I writing this review. Wanted to make sure the long trip home (snow in the midwest) didn't skew my opinions. I will try to break the resort and amenities down in sections. There were 8 in our group (six in their 20's and 2 in 50's) Location - It is remote, no other resorts and only the town of La Cruz nearby. Take an excursion off the property, if you stay for several days, a full day or two off is not out of line. ((We did ours through Tony Expeditions - see my review on their page) I found the location to be fine though next time would stay further down the coast near more hotels and towns to explore and maybe a night or two at Arenal, only because there is so much to see in this great country. Resort/Rooms - The grounds are beautiful, but spread out. Our group, who all were "preferred club" were in 4 different buildings, not sure why that happened as some were down by beach and others way up by restaurants. Two of our rooms were near monkeys that would come right down on balcony. Very cool but remember to keep your sliding doors shut and locked when you aren't around. The Master suites are big but the layout is a bit funky. Big living area and patios. A sliding wooden door separating living area from bedroom and you had to walk through bedroom to get to bathroom. Only TV is in bedroom so if you get up early you can't watch it without disturbing the others sleep. The bathroom was big, wish there would've been a magnifying make up mirror though. Also there is no conditioner, just conditioning shampoo (yuck). The pools are gorgeous and there are lots of chairs. However the resort was 94% full for a few of the days we were there and people grabbed them up very early. The two days that they were at 70% capacity was no problem getting chairs. Lots of weddings when we were there which were fun to watch on the beach. Restaurant/Bars - We found all the servers, waitstaff and bartenders very friendly. Treat the staff with respect and they will bend over backwards for you. l was appalled at how rude and demanding some guests were being. The food was good. We ate at all the restaurants at some point. Our favorite was Himitsu (we reserved the grill 24 hours in advance). Oceana was kind enough to cook the fish our group caught. The longest wait was for the Italian Restaurant but it was when the resort was full on the Saturday night. And with Italian nobody rushes their meal. The drinks were well poured at all the restaurants and bars. The coffee at Coco Cafe was good. Beach - It's ok, not one you can walk very far. water was warm. Waves fun. Sunsets were amazing. You can check out snorkel equipment, paddle boards (although they need more for the number of guests they have), kayaks. Quite a few people took advantage of the guided sunset kayak trip. The Amstar beach staff was very nice as were all the beach workers. Preferred club - I'm on the fence on this one. We had the preferred club at Dreams in Punta Cana and it was worth the extra $. Not sure this one was considering our rooms were all over the place. The designated area on the beach wasn't anything better than the regular side. The liquor everywhere seemed to be the same brands. The preferred club was a nice gathering place to meet before dinner and had good continental breakfast items plus eggs and protein so if you didn't want buffet it was an option. I was disappointed in the evening snacks...all desserts. The one in Punta Cana had beach cabana beds for P-Club and the food and liquor in the P-Club was above the other bars. I did think check in and out went well, although they forgot to pick us and our bags up at the designated time for check out but guessing we just got lost in the many leaving on Sunday. And like other reviewers have said, make an access sidewalk coming from both sides of the resort to the reception/preferred club area instead of just one. Misc items - 2 of us went to the spa and had the fish eat our feet. It was cool, a bit pricey but fun just the same. Massages were over priced. Entertainment was so-so but it's really not my thing (other than the live cover band). WARNING - The gift shop is HIGHLY overpriced. Bring plenty of your own sunscreen (more than you think you will need) as a spray bottle was $32.95!!! Seriously, you have to have it and they gouge you like that. Luckily when we went off property we were able to stop and buy some and got 3 bottles for what 1 would have cost us at the resort. Also, be mindful of the slippery concrete around the pool. We saw several people slip and one poor lady broke her wrists. Not sure there was anything the resort could do but be careful. There were some minor issues with electricity going off but it was never for very long and really didn't impact anything. Generators kicked in where needed. Some people have referenced the raccoons, we saw a few walking back at night but they are more scared of you than you of them. They may startle you a bit but really don't want anything to do with you. All in all I would recommend this resort. Shout out to Angel, Mario at the swim up bar, Pablo at the barefoot grill, the wonderful chef who cooked our tuna we caught at Oceana..she rocked. And all the wonderful servers through out the resort. I truly believe the people you travel with make all the difference and we had an amazing time! Pura Vida!

Dream vacation at the Dreams

We traveled from April 14-21, 2019 to Dreams Las Mareas. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and we had a mountain view with plenty of Monkeys visiting daily. The resort itself is very luscious and clean with an abundance of wildlife. We didn’t use the pools however their was always chairs available. The beach is amazing. The water is beautiful and clear and you can snorkel right in front of the resort. If you are adventurous during low tide you can walk for miles to the right with amazing rock formations. The food was delicious. We enjoyed every al a carte. The seafood at the oceanna was our favourite. We were lucky enough to catch a Tuna and the chef did an amazing job cooking for us. We had sashimi, ceviche, lightly battered and pan fried. Outstanding. The staff were overall amazing. Extremely friendly and the service was great. A special thank you to Paola from the Rendezvous bar. We forgot our camera on the table on our first night and when we came back the next day she had put it aside for us. I am extremely thankful. The only few thing we didn’t like was checkin. We travel often and it was a little slow with needless paper work. On a side note if you need to see the doctor at the resort you will pay anywhere from $120-150 USD. The paramedics are free however. The resort is isolated and if you want to do tours expect to spend most of the day traveling. We did a sunset sail at the resort which was amazing. We did a separate review. The resort has kayaks, bikes, snorkel gear to available. Overall we had an amazing week at Dreams Las Mareas. Great weather, people, food, drinks, and service. We highly recommend this resort.

Absolutely beautiful resort. Food was just okay. Service was horrible. We arrived on a Friday and requested to upgrade to a swim out room. Unfortunately there weren’t any available that day, which we totally understood, so we stayed in the original room that we booked until the next day when swim out rooms became available. Swim out rooms are an upgrade to premium which is supposed to include high end alcohol in the room as well as a premium lounge, that was nice, and the swim out pool. The refrigerator in our room was shy of drinks. We called twice to get it filled, which we were told someone would be there shortly, no one ever showed up. I spoke to the person who delivered room service in the morning, he also said he’d take care of it. Once again, that didn’t happen. Called mid afternoon again, no one showed up. After all those attempts, I decided to make a visit to the front desk in person. After complaining and speaking to a manager, Russell, he finally sent someone to fill up the refrigerator as it was supposed to be. I requested one days’ upgrade cost back, and it was denied. It is definitely not worth it to upgrade at Dreams Las Mareas in Costa Rica. Most employees barely speak English. Twice we ordered food at two different restaurants and we did not get what we asked for due to language barrier. We did run into three employees who spoke English well and were very nice. Best employee for us during our stay was Sheile from entertainment. She was amazing. We ran into her every day. Her smile, friendliness, and energy was outstanding. We loved her. Again, beautiful resort, but I don’t recommend upgrading to premium, not worth it. Also, if customer service and quality of food is important to you, then you might want to try a different resort. If I do go back to Costa Rica, I will try a different resort myself.

A slice of nature

The grounds are like a botanical garden. Nice pools. Monkeys, raccoons, rabbits and numerous bird species. Rooms are nice with awkward separation of bathroom facilities from sleep area. Service was very good, though a bit understaffed. Gift shop and spa are woefully overpriced. Very very remote, which is good and bad, depending on your aggenda.

3 night stay

The property is gorgeous, the grounds are beautiful and very well maintained, as well as all the swimming pools. The restaurants are fabulous, we had outstanding experiences every time except for the one Saturday night when tons of new people came and it was full. We had a new waiter who forgot our food and got it wrong when he did bring it. Other than that the food and drinks were exceptional.
