    I was expecting an amazing experience coming to this hotel, it was suppose to be the highlight of our trip to big Island but it was not to be. Basically a joke from the start, checked in and waited for our bags to arrive to our room, half an hour after check in I had to go back down to the concierge and ask for our bags as we wanted to go straight to the beach, concierge lady assured that they would bring them up, I saw the young concierge man walking past me and reminded about our bags, he rudely ignored my request so I ended up taking my own bags to our room and the rude concierge lady even refused to let me use the hotel trolley so here I am walking through the lobby with 2 suitcases and snorkeling gear all the way to the 7th floor, unbelievable! Worst experience I’ve ever had in a hotel! Rooms are old and tired, no jug to boil water for a cup of tea, had to request one, went to use the room telephone and it was not connected. This kind of nonsense I would tolorate from a budget hotel but this is expensive. The service is where this hotel fails, none of the staff seem to care. These days as there are many better options willing to look after their guests and exceed their expectation for this kind of money, won’t be back or recommend.

    A beautiful hotel in a gorgeous location

    Stayed at the Mauna Kea for three nights recently, first time in Hawaii. This is a truly incredible property with great service. Great beach, incredible vistas, truly helpful and knowledgeable staff. We had a romantic dinner at the "Manta" restaurant one night and it was perfect. The food was incredible, but the setting was even better. If you decide to eat at Manta, I would recommend getting a reservation at about sunset just as we did It was like a story book.. Can't think of a single thing that could have made it any better!

    Service with a smile... but

    Upon arrival, we were greeted by the front desk person and one of the managers, without the lei's, cool drinks and towels that everyone else was receiving. Hmm, that was the first inkling that things were about to head south. We were celebrating our anniversary, and of course had requested a room with a king bed, and they assured us there were none to be had, and that it was first come first served as far as bed configuration requests, but, to make up for it, we would be upgraded to an ocean view room. This sounds good, but we already expected to be upgraded, as my spouse is a Platinum Elite member with Marriott. They gave us 3 room keys, and said we could choose one of the three, all three having 2 double beds. The three rooms were: a beach wing room, a golf view room, and an ocean view room. They said the ocean view room was not the "actual" room, but the one available would be identical, just a floor above the one we were given keys to. We chose the ocean view, and went to have lunch. When we picked up our keys, we were very disappointed, as the room was a handicap accessible room, so, not exactly like the room we viewed. I feel this was very deceptive and the deception was purposeful. Unfortunately, the accessible shower left us with a soaking wet floor daily. Not to mention that the seat in the shower takes up space and that we virtually had no counter space. Add the double beds to that, and you have one disappointed anniversary couple. So, the next morning, we went down to ask when a king room would become available, and they said there was one coming up, but we could only have it for 2 nights, and then would have to move again.... WHAT?! I'm not sure why we would have to move again if we would already be IN IT, what happened to first come first served??????? This totally put a damper on our week and has soured us towards the property. We eventually did have the opportunity to speak with someone higher up, and he listened to our saga, and apologized profusely, and wanted to right the wrong. I wish we would have found him sooner, as we only had two nights left, and it wouldn't have been worth the effort to move at that point. If/when we return, we will definitely email him first! The Positives: -best beach and beach staff anywhere in Hawaii -housekeeping services that were on point -great beverages and bartenders at the Manta Restaurant/Bar -valet/bellman and greeters were so cheerful, helpful, and quick to be of service -large furnished lanai -ocean view The Cons: -check in and room selection -one desk chair in room, you have to take turns sitting -food selection -breakfast buffet, food that wasn't even being held at proper temperatures -pest control -feral cats wandering through restaurant

    Outstanding hotel w an old world charm and eye catching surroundings

    We stayed here for 5 days in May in an oceanside room in the main tower. Absolutely loved our experience. The service - twice a day - was fantastic - courteous, clean and friendly. Breakfast buffet at Manta restaurant was delicious. And the property is on Mauna kea beach, which is pristine, with well maintained landscaping, never get bored views. They even switched on the lights in the night to invite Manta Rays , so no need to spend money to go in a boat unless you like night snorkeling. The beach and bay is very swim friendly. Already planning on going back next year!!!!!!

    Amazing stay. Didn't wanna leave the property.

    Stayed May 6th - 10th as a couple. Our first time in Hawaii. Drove in, gave my name to the security gate man, he lifted the gate and let me in. When I got to the valet, STEVE already knew my name and greeted us with a warm welcome. He took our bags and escorted us to the check in desk. This was my first impression of the property and it was a very good one. ROCHELLE checked us in and informed me that we were upgraded from our golf view room to a beach/pool view room (room 322). This turned out to be huge because not only were the views incredible, our room was mere steps from the beach and pool. I could literally walk from the pool to my room in less than 60 seconds. This is why I always book directly through the property website. First thing to do? Why check out the pool of course. The beautiful BEVERLY greeted us with a smile and set us up with towels and chair covers. When I asked if there was drink service, she said "Well we already did last call, but I can get you something. What would you like?" That right there is called going above and beyond. This is an ILWU property and it shows in the work ethic of its staff. We spent the entire next day, my birthday, poolside. We met ROSE and she was super attentive, friendly, and just a delight to chat with. The cocktails were tasty all day. The pool scene was very mellow with some kids here and there and mostly older couples relaxing with a book. No music was played, you could hear the waves crash instead. I dig that. Oh yeah, we ordered a salad to share and it was so good! We got the same salad the next day except that time we each got our own. A+ pool experience and a lot of that is because of the hard work of the pool team which I dubbed the AVIATOR SQUAD. Cheers and thank you, ladies! Day 3: Beach Day. I got up early to stake seats even though I didnt really need to. I'm a so cal native so I'm no stranger to beaches. But I've never swam in ocean water so clear and warm. I love that there have big rafts anchored out at sea that you can swim to and relax on. I swam to the farthest one and there was a sea turtle chillin in the shade of the raft, munching on the algae growing on the raft. It was really cool. Later in the day, we both swam to the closer raft. Like the pool, the vibe at the beach is super mellow and relaxed. Hardly any waves, which could be a good or bad thing depending on the person. Day 4: pool day/sunburn recovery day. Ate breakfast at Manta. The food was on point and the view was breathtaking. We went back to the pool where some dude in his his 40s decided he needed fins and a kickboard to swim laps in a tiny pool. He was kicking up water and making things not pleasant for other guests. Well this lasted about 5 minutes before management came and politely asked him to cease. He acted like a whiny kid and was saying stuff like "do you know who my family is? we've been coming here since the 70s" I only mention this cause I want management to know they did the right thing. That dude was lame. Later we took the shuttle to the Westin for dinner at Meridia. Had a great dinner there and it was cool to see another property. I can see why so many guests I spoke to keep coming back to this place.
