Relax, Calm and Rest
Excellent hotel to relax and Rest. We stayed in the adult side. Very clean, well kept and quiet. They have two pools, but the main one is under renovation and will hopefully be opened by December 2024. The second pool is closer to the beach, has restaurants, food trucks, and a bar near by. They have activities in both sides of the resort. Those who stay in the adult side came move to the family side without any problem. Walking in the resort is very easy and amenable. The resort has a mini market, coffee shop and other stores. The restaurants served excellent food and have a variety of healthy options, even in the buffet. Rooms are big and comfortable but the furniture is old and dated, at least the one we stayed in. The staff are very professional, courteous and helpful. We highly recommend this hotel and we are sure we will come back.

A Bit Disappointing
Just returned from a one-week stay at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro. We had a mostly enjoyable time, but would probably not choose to return to this particular hotel. We have been traveling to the Caribbean since 2001, and have returned to the Dominican Republic at least 20 times in those years, staying in many different all-inclusive hotels and a couple of condos. In general, we have found the Dominican people to be charming and welcoming, the beaches to be absolutely beautiful, and the hotels lovely and affordable. We encountered a few issues at the Catalonia. #1, and this is big, the WIFI in our room didn’t work for the first 6 days -out of 7- we were there. We reported this Every. Single. Day. (To anyone who would listen.) They have great WIFI everywhere on this property, including the beach, all public areas, and every single room except ours, apparently. Normally this would not be a big deal (you’re on vacation, don’t have to be online constantly) but at the Catalonia, everything is done by WIFI. Dinner reservations (you can also make in the lobby), restaurant menus, room service, entertainment schedules, map of the property, everything is online. That’s OK unless you can’t get online. The Netflix, Disney, and other streaming channels never did work. In addition, we were not able to regulate the A/C in our room. Husband about froze to death. We spoke to our neighbors, who had no A/C at all. The rooms are kept very clean, but this is an older property and you can tell it. Might be a good idea to bring a power strip along—we only had two electrical outlets in our room (one in the bathroom, one for the coffee pot.) #2: This is the first hotel we’ve stayed at where we felt the Spanish/English language barrier was huge. We had a hard time understanding & being understood by quite a few of the staff members. I also felt that the service to Spanish-speaking people was much better than we received. I have seen others note this in reviews and did not want to believe it, but it is true. That being said, there are some great people who work here. #3: There is a good bit of construction/updating going on. If you are thinking of booking at the Catalonia Royal, check on the status of the main adult pool, which was closed the entire time we were there, and by the looks of it, will be closed for another month? (my guess) The adult buffet restaurant is also closed for remodeling. At this time, patrons from the family side can come over to all the adults-only side for meals, drinks, etc. and vice-versa. No children are allowed on the adult side. To be honest, we found the wait staff and bartenders to be much more friendly on the family side of the resort. #4: The food is mediocre at best. We tried a different restaurant every night. The Tao Cat, the Bloved, and the Mikado (on the family side) were our top picks. There is not much seafood on the menus (we saw salmon a lot, but really? We’re on an island!) and the beef is generally pretty chewy. Not much in the way of breakfast selections. The hamburgers were pretty darn good though. #5: They’re always trying to up sell you to the Exclusive Club. We had booked a Privileged room because it wasn’t much extra, but I really think all the rooms are basically the same. When you’re on vacation, you really don’t want to spend your time listening to a sales pitch. We finally asked them to just leave us alone & they did. #6: The bars, drinks, and service are better on the family side of this resort. Things we liked: They have golf carts that will take you anywhere you want to go on the property (we’re older, we liked this.) They are very Eco-friendly, wasting nothing and using no disposable plastics and the like. The infinity pool was lovely & quiet, maybe not to your liking if you’d rather have a party atmosphere. All in all, a good vacation, but we probably will not return to this resort.

A great vacation- we will be back!
Don’t let other negative reviews of this resort discourage you from coming here. We had an absolutely fabulous time at this resort. From Yaritza at check in accommodating our rooms to be in the same villa, 4 doors down, to the service every part of the resort. The maintenance crew works very hard to keep the beach clean every morning, and they sift seaweed out of the water multiple times a day with machetes for guests. Deivy was our guy all week long, he brings the smiles to the guests as well as makes the best drinks! Felix at BLoved for breakfast started our morning off with a smile. We did not even notice the pool construction, there was always a lounger for us at any time of the day. Thank you Catalonia Royal for an amazing vacation, can’t wait to see all our friends again next year!

Have other options besides Catalonia Bavaro
When you first arrive at Catalonia Bavaro Adult only side, it looks amazing. The rooms looks as it appear on the site, but the food is horrible. No options to have straws when drinking from a glass and not many options as far as activities and resturants on the adult only side.
