Great Hotel
Lovely hotel in a great location. Extremely pleasant and helpful staff from the people on reception to the cleaning ladies. Nothing was too much trouble and there was always service with a smile. Spotlessly clean in every part of the hotel and grounds. Our room was large with a great view and as standard came with air conditioning, ceiling fan, fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. The choice of food at breakfast and dinner was extensive and of really good quality. The chefs were always on hand to make sure everything was topped up and plentiful. Never had any issues with choosing to eat either inside or on the terrace. Price of drinks very reasonable. With regards to the sunbeds, yes you do get the usual people who queue and race to get their "special" place but we never had a problem getting one. We cannot rate this hotel highly enough, it is one of the best we have ever stayed in and cannot wait to return.

Excellent food. Many choices all served hot. Friedly staff all round. Pool area a little regimented at times, mainly because of the unusual high temperature

Not For us
Positives The hotel was situated on the beach which was lovely, could always find a sunbed and parasol around the pool area. We were given room 541 which overlooked the pool area and beach. Evening entertainment was sadly not for us so we went out every night, lots of little bars some with live music, must take a walk up to the Balcon, the views are amazing. Negatives It did not seem that housekeeping changed the bedding for the duration of our stay (2 weeks) very disappointing RIU. The food some nights were hit and miss but plentiful I know it's difficult catering for a extremely busy hotel but find the quality of products a bit of a let down, it seems to me that the Riu group are cutting costs pre COVID.

June break
Check in was easy although I did see check in queues at busy arrival times. I used a private transfer and avoided the full bus checking in. Room on 6th floor was spotlessly clean and ready for us at 12:00 midday. The hotel has a relaxed laid back feel and caters for the older clientele perfectly but not exclusively as I did see some under 40’s. The pool area is well spread out with plenty of loungers but the best ones go early morning in the ‘le- mans’ sprint start which is a joy to watch. Very nice snack bar which doubles as part of the speciality restaurant some evenings. The choice of food at mealtimes is more than adequate for most tastes and good quality. Only gripe is no honey at evening mealtime for the cheese course ( me being picky) Bar service in the entertainment areas is generally good although sometimes you feel invisible despite waving at the drink servers for attention. 4 lifts if your on the high floors so you never wait long. There is a beach directly out the back door from the pool area. Hotel is a 15 min walk from the centre and there are Tapas bars within 5 mins walk from Hotel. This was our 2nd visit and it won’t be our last. Highly recommend the Monica

Nice hotel, but...
We stayed at Hotel Monica in Nerja as two couples. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the staff work very hard to make the stay enjoyable. A few things didn't quite hit the mark for us personally. Firstly, the food. As vegetarians we know we are in the minority but other hotels that we have stayed in have made an effort to recognise that not everyone will be eating meat. The option to have a meal al a carte in a separate restaurant did not offer a single vegetarian dish so that option was a non starter. We ended up eating out a number of evenings as a result. The other couple that we travelled with had a problem with their room key card almost every day. Being on the 7th floor, it was quite a disappointment to discover that the key didn't work and have to make their way back down to reception. By the time we left, this had not been resolved. The pool area was quite cramped with sunbeds very close to each other. As usual, guests felt it necessary to put towels on sunbeds early in the morning. We were even made aware of one couple reserving beds in two locations in the pool area so that they could move to the sunnier spot in the afternoon. This is obviously down to selfish guests but the hotel could do more to stop this. We chose to use the beach instead. We still enjoyed our holiday and thank the staff for their service and friendliness. A shame that somethings weren't quite right.
