Get it Together: Management Out of Touch with Hotel's Original Character

When we arrived for a very big anniversary we were assigned a room in the back of hotel looking at pool and ocean. Disappointed they couldn't give us ocean front as they have numerous times in the past when occupancy allowed. The first day we went to the adult pool and there was basically no service-- 1 attendant for set up, drinks and food. Shocking at a 5 star hotel. This continued for the remainder of our stay. 3 different employees by the beach said it was their first day and knew nothing. The employees did not seem happy. The beach club was in transition so one day there was like 1 person at the beach for towels, etc. and then there were more people available the next day who had just started. Each day we had to wait at least 20 minutes to be seated for breakfast which again is not how a 5 star hotel works. The night of our anniversary my siblings had called the Canoe House to send wine but no one called them back. Then they called the hotel and sent strawberries that arrived with no note or explanation. I happened to be speaking to my brother when the strawberries arrived and he laughed when I said I wonder who sent these. Fortunately he told me it was him!! We had a nice dinner at the famed Canoe House. There were no bottles of wine under $120. Our dinner was $440 for 2 for 2 appetizers, 1 opakapaka for 2 and 2 glasses of champagne. That may be the new normal. Hopefully things will straighten out at this most beautiful property. The sadness for us is that this felt like corporate culture overtaking the uniquely Hawaiian environment. Looks like we will return to the Mauna Kea when the remodel is finished or Kona Village.

Nice resort but a few issues that need to be addressed.

The resort is very nice with a top flight beach, restaurants, pools and chairs by beach and pool. Breakfast had a 20-30 minute daily wait despite many many empty tables. There simply was no excuse for such a wait given that the facility was half empty and a buffet. This caused us to skip breakfast on certain days despite the fact that our breakfast was included through amex fine hotels. As nice as the facilities are, by 9:00 am all of the chairs on the beach were occupied indicating a severe shortage of chairs. If you are on vacation, you don't want to have to wake up early and race to beach to get a chair or miss out. We ended up renting for an additional fee chairs with a clamshell umbrella in order to not have to wake up early and rush to the beach. We used the spa which does not include a sauna, steam room or hot tub. We had a couples massage which they took us to outside the spa in a hotel room. It seemed makeshift and temporary and not of the level we would have expected at this level resort. The massage itself was excellent, Overall this is a very nice resort with high quality amenities with the exception of the spa. I should note although the spa facilities were lacking, the spa staff were excellent and both very nice and professional;. Sunsets are spectacular and the chairs by the pool and beach, if you can get them, have superior cushions. This resort has obviously put significant dollars into the common areas and amenities with the exception of the spa, The staff was excellent, professional and very nice.

Solo Traveler’s Paradise – A Serene Escape at Mauna Lani

As a solo traveler, I’m always looking for destinations that balance tranquility, safety, and meaningful experiences—and Mauna Lani delivered on all fronts. From the moment I arrived, the welcoming staff made me feel at ease. The atmosphere is both elegant and relaxed, with thoughtful touches that reflect the Hawaiian spirit. The property is beautifully maintained, with expansive grounds, lush landscaping, and quiet areas that are perfect for reflection or simply soaking in the view. What stood out most as a solo guest was the sense of peace and personal space. Whether lounging by the adults-only pool, walking the grounds or dining, I never felt out of place or rushed. The on-site restaurants offered delicious options with bar seating—ideal for a party of one. I also appreciated how staff took time to learn my name and offer personalized suggestions. If you're traveling alone and seeking a rejuvenating, luxurious, and culturally grounded Hawaiian escape, Mauna Lani is a gem. I left feeling recharged and grateful for the peaceful time I had.

    Our 4th Auberge

The resort is beautiful and historic but the rooms are dated and small. We stayed in an oceanfront room for 5 nights which was clean and renovated but small and no bathtub. The patio/lanai was large and relaxing. The close and protected lagoon area is great for paddle boarding and seeing sea turtles up close. We had a lovely family photo shoot and the backdrop was stunning. The food at Canoehouse was delicious and they were very accommodating for a large family dinner. We ended each night with drinks there at the bar and the bartenders were patient and friendly. The breakfast is temporarily at Canoehouse which tends to run a wait no matter what time you go. The hostesses at Canoehouse (breakfast) are the least interested and unfriendly staff we encountered. We tried to make them smile (which is not our job as a guest necessarily) but morning after morning, it seemed clear that they hated their job or the guests or both. Viola at breakfast was AMAZING and she made us forget how unpleasant the hostesses were. Zoe at Ha Bar should be promoted immediately! She epitomizes guest experience! Ha Bar needs to replace its straw bins, which are in the guest purview, and look like a mongoose attacked them. Also thank you to Zach at the bar. You cannot get food after 9:30pm. Moving to 4S Lanai next. Mahalo!
