Family Concierge Saves the Stay, but Sales Tactics & Service Issues Let It Down

We stayed at Paradisus Grand Cana – All Suites as a family and booked a Family Concierge swim-up room, which was without a doubt one of the best parts of our stay. The swim-up pool was amazing and ideal for families, allowing us to relax while the kids enjoyed constant access to the water. The resort caters well to all ages. The kids’ splash park was perfect for our little one, and there is genuinely something for everyone, from toddlers to adults. A big family highlight was the Meliá Community Fun Zone, called Fun Republic. Everything is included, which means you can simply turn up and enjoy it — rides, music, desserts, food and snacks, crazy golf, limited fairground-style rides, and a soft play area. It’s a great addition for families and gave us some fun evening options with the kids. Getting around the resort is easy, with golf carts available to take you to the beach and the aqua park if you don’t feel like walking, which is very helpful when travelling with children. However, room cleanliness wasn’t at the level expected for a resort of this price point. Housekeeping felt inconsistent and could definitely be improved. The standout of our stay was our Family Concierge member, Kenia. She was phenomenal — attentive, caring, and always available. Her communication was excellent and nothing ever felt like a problem. She handled all of our à la carte restaurant reservations, which made a huge difference. Thanks to Kenia, the concierge upgrade was absolutely worth the extra cost, and without her the stay would have been far more stressful. Dining was another weak point. While the food quality was good, every à la carte restaurant suffered from slow service. Even though the resort appeared to be around 70% capacity, service felt as though staff were working at 99% capacity, leading to long waits and a rushed experience — particularly challenging when dining with children. The biggest let-down of the entire holiday was the membership meeting on our second-to-last day. The sales approach was extremely pushy and uncomfortable. Despite repeated hesitation, the sales team continued to pressure us, and before we knew it we had signed up for a Meliá membership we didn’t need. After properly reading the terms and conditions, it honestly sounded terrible and left a very sour taste at the end of what should have been a relaxing family holiday. This experience felt completely out of place in a supposed luxury resort. In summary, Paradisus Grand Cana has fantastic family facilities and huge potential, but it is let down by inconsistent cleanliness, slow dining service, and overly aggressive sales tactics. The Family Concierge experience — especially with someone like Kenia — truly makes or breaks the stay, and we would not recommend visiting without it.

Terrible stay. Not coming back not recommending.

This resort has lack of management. No ine can speak or understand proper English including the managers. They booked us a restaurant for a group of 5 families elderlies and kids we go there and after waiting long time we realize it wasn't even booked. No compensation offered for the mistake they made. Day after our 4 year old foot gets cut while she's playing in the pool. The medical center doesn't have any professional first aid. The cut was so deep and didn't stop bleeding. It was hard to belive that we didn't even get a proper apology. The pool is so small and full of tile cracks.

    Amazing Customer Focus

Melia Grand is perfect for families that want to chill, relax and be taken care of. Their kids zone was so amazing that my 15yr old always wanted to go there. The staff are very attentive and ready to provide you with everything you need. Activities are a bit limited but Fun Republic was a fantastic outlet for the kids. I will definitely be going back soon!

    Good but be very careful

Great ambiance, rooms and area. Generally good but careful with staff. Lured into spending with membership. Staff asked for tips for normal inquiries at the front desk. Absolutely shocked. If you ask for something as far as an anniversary or wedding request, forget it. They will be polite but deep down they seem very distant and only want tips

Overall happy. Decent food, nice rooms, beautiful property.

We just returned from Paradisus. I wish that there were half star options as I would say this is a 4.5 star experience. The resort seemed under capacity. We did the upgrade to family concierge at the time of booking and the cost difference was minimal. Our concierge brought us to our room and our bags arrived moments after. Concierge Our concierge was Jerfy. He was helpful and responsive. As family concierge, there's a separate check in area that also has premium liquors to make yourself a drink, or coffee, and there was a mini fridge with coke, sprite, diet coke etc as well as orange juice boxes and chocolate milk. There were also some snacks there throughout the day (mini sandwiches and pastries, cheeses) and candy for the kids. You could stop in any time to get something. There was also early access to the water park (10 am vs 11). And premium liquors offered at the bars (except sometimes they didn't give it unless you asked). There was also various activities included for family concierge guests only, though we didn't do those, and there was an excursion included where you would travel off the resort to see how coffee, chocolate and mamajuana were made. Another benefit was you could eat breakfast in mangu (near the main pool). We never did this though. Our concierge made all our reservations for us daily. He also sent us the daily activity schedules each morning (in WhatsApp) and would check in when he'd see us around the resort. We were supposed to have beach toys in the room but we did not receive them as they didn't have any. We did have a beach bag and two pairs of flip flops in the room, but they weren't our size so we didn't use them. Lastly we did get a bottle of rum in our room and a bottle of wine when we arrived. We also had help from Onil who was also very appreciated. Our room Our room was facing the main pool and the sound really carried at night time. It was loud until around 11 pm each night so if you have very young children you might consider asking for a room facing the outside. The rooms were otherwise very nice. A dining table and living room area with pullout sofa, kitchenette with mini bar (stocked daily with water, pop, Perrier, beer and orange juice) and a coffee maker but tiny cups and no milk, and they also left lays chips and m&ms each day too. The bedroom area had two double beds, I wish they were queens. There were two closets to hang some clothes with small drawers, and then a main closet near the front door as well. The bathroom has a separate toilet and shower areas but the doors are frosted glass and they aren't very private. The bathroom has a lock on the one door but the access from the bedroom is just a pocket door so it isn't the best for privacy. There are shampoo, conditioner and body wash supplied as well as a small soap and toothbrush and toothpaste kit. There is a button on the door to press for privacy or if you want your room cleaned and it acts like a doorbell on the other side. The pools The main pool never felt too crowded and we could almost always get a cabana. There were plenty all the way around. Lots of towels too. Many people saved their cabanas but it was hardly an issue, though I could see how it would be at busier times. There was a swim up bar and entertainment at the pool daily. The kids waterpark is good for toddlers and bigger kids alike. There are three sections and a small wading pool as well. Lots of cabanas and loungers at the waterpark and an area for drinks, ice cream and sit down casual meals. I think it was well maintained but lots of guests would leave their garbage around so I think it could use a few more garbage cans. The property The resort property itself was nicely laid out and fairly walkable, the beach is a bit of a hike but it's not terrible and there's shuttles running frequently enough to take you back and forth. Lots of palm trees, flowers and overall pretty. They were doing some small repairs and maintenance while we were there as well. There are a few stray cats but they didn't bother us. The beach The beach was really nice when we were there. Not very much seaweed and the sand is soft..lots of loungers with palapas on the beach for family concierge guests. There's also a restaurant at the beach that was pretty tasty with many seafood (and not) options, shrimp tacos etc and things for the kids. There were some activities at the beach as well but we did not participate. There are also of course vendors on the beach and they did come up to the palapas and try and sell you on their excursions, hair braiding, etc. The food The buffet had a lot of options. For breakfasts they had a few omelette and egg stations so I never waited very long, bacon, sausages, beans, potatoes, pancakes, French toast, croissants, muffins, breads, (even some packaged gluten free options) bagels, cream cheese and other cheeses, fruits, vegetables, cereals, yogurts and yogurt drinks, oatmeal etc. and smoothies. I do think there was something for everyone. I think overall, the food could definitely have been hotter and the cold foods could have been colder. At lunch and dinner they had a good variety as well. Pasta station, various meats and vegetables, fish, breads, soups, fruits, charcuterie type meats and cheeses, ice cream and popsicles and desserts. The hostesses at the buffet were always very friendly and welcoming. Service was hit and miss but we were never there for very long. The other lunch option is the waterpark or the beach place. There are also a few restaurants that require reservations. A steakhouse, an Asian restaurant with a few different reservation options (teppanyaki being one), a ceviche restaurant, a Dominican restaurant, and there's one for circle club members only. There's also a sports bar that opens at 3 and serves things like wings and burgers and has pool tables and lots of TVs playing various sports. There's also room service included, but we never used this, although we did once get paper plates from the buffet to bring something back to the room. Entertainment In addition to the daily activities and pool entertainment there was nightly entertainment in the lobby or sometimes just outside, near the pool or outside the outdoor section of the buffet. We went almost every night and it was always enjoyable. There is also a place nearby called fun Republic that is a short shuttle ride away and they will take you there, it's on a neighbouring property and was a lot of fun. It's all included and has an indoor play place, mini golf, a carousel, a slingshot type swing, a climbing trek thing and entertainment as well as food, drinks and ice cream . I didn't eat there so can't comment on the food but it was fun and you can go as many times as you like (open Wednesday to Sunday and only at 6pm). We went a couple of times. The bars and drinks The bar outside the buffet makes excellent espresso and espresso related drinks. There's also bars inside the restaurants and the pool bar, and another one opposite the pool bar. Never had to go too far to get a drink and the drinks were good. They do use paper cups at many of the bars near the pool or if you are taking a drink to go. They don't hold very long . There's a gift shop on site that is incredibly expensive. $45 usd for one sunscreen, for example. Definitely bring everything you think you might need from home. Overall I think it was a nice family trip and I got what I paid for. It wasn't perfect but I try to be easy going and just enjoy it .
