Nice resort, unfortunate a-la-cart planning
Just came back from 8 days, staff was amazing and very attentive. It's a good thing the buffet was varied and kept well provided as we had to line up for a half to a full hour in the sun to access the a-la-cart restaurants. In Italian we were not even able to schedule a later meal after lining up, so it was 6pm or nothing. At the Steak house we were given a 7:30 return time, which is what we would have booked if able. Fortunately we caught the Mexican in a quiet moment and were able to walk in for that unique buffet.

Lost it's Tropical feel
They have done a lovely job & have added plants & shrubbery. The rooms look good but the beds are extremely hard. Don't like the way the pools are all side by side - very crowded & loud. Tiles around the pools are a death trap - extremely slippery. The poles that hold up the shade canopies make it impossible for a wheelchair or stroller to reach the loungers in the shade. they have a hamburger, fries, hotdogs & a taco station by the pool where you are allowed to eat around the pool. They have carts with alcohol, water & pop that go around the pools on a regular basis which is very nice, the only thing is that the rows 2 & 3 under the shade canopies rarely get served. The other lunch area is back at the main buffet. Really miss the fountains & have replaced them with a large white monstrosity which contains an American restaurant which serves terrible food, a small ice-cream parlor & a huge sports bar which is nearly always empty - to me a complete waste of space. Have improved the handicap washrooms a lot but are slow at making repairs. Miss all of the previous palms & greenery - it has definitely lost its' tropical feel.

Beautifully renovated but still working out quirks
Overall enjoyed my stay here. Fantastic entertainment, incredibly clean resort and good food. The pools were plentiful and had a lot of fun activities throughout the day. Lots of washrooms close by that were constantly being kept clean by staff. I felt there were not enough restaurant wait staff and the ones that they had were completely run off their feet trying to do the job of two or more. The result being plates weren’t cleaned off tables, drinks weren’t refilled etc. Another strange thing was the bathroom area did not have a door, so no privacy for a guest getting out of the shower. My friend brought her own extension pole and shower curtain to give us privacy. Lastly, it’s supposed to be non smoking resort but some guests chose to ignore this rule without staff approaching to ask them to stop.

Riu Jalisco - post renovation
The renovations are very nice. Definitely more of a modern look. Everything seems to be finished and good quality. Pool: The new tile around the pool was an extremely poor choice. It is insanely slippery when wet. I fell once, and we saw MANY other people fall or almost fall. Everyone walks around like they’re on ice. They’ll need to do something to make it safer. Besides that the pools were great. The kid pool area was really nice, aiming more towards younger kids than teenagers. Service around the pool was basically non existent. You had to go to the pool bar or bar in the pool buffet area to get drinks. I was personally fine with this, but where they could use more staff would be to clean up cups and plates after people to keep it neater and keep the birds away. There is no staff to monitor chairs. We never had a problem, but I could see this being a problem during busy times. The towel situation is annoying, you can only get one new beach towel a day. I can absolutely understand wanting to cut back on towels, but one a day is ridiculous. Most of the chairs have sun coverage from large sun canopy’s. That was lovely! Beach: the ocean was so much fun! There are definitely some big waves so you need to be careful, but boogie boarding was a blast. Room: We thought the room Reno’s were done really well and the cleaning staff were great. If you needed to call for room service it was there extremely fast. The pillows are awful but you can always call for more (no selection, more of the same). And the room towels look like they were pre-renovation, but they were clean and we were always given new ones. Food: The main buffet and pool buffet were really good. It definitely wasn’t as good as some other resorts we’ve been to, but good for what we paid. The specialty restaurants were very disappointing. They were mainly buffets, and a lot of the food they had, you could find at the main buffet. The Asian one was the best in my opinion. It has different options from the main buffet and lots of flavour. We didn’t even try the American one, the menu was basic and the restaurant was always empty looking. The Mexican one was extremely bland, which was really sad. The steak one was ok. Honestly, until they get the speciality restaurants figured out I’d go to the main buffet. I gave service a lower rating not because of the staff, they were great and worked very hard but because there needed to be more.

Overall Great
The new wing had very pleasant rooms, but not much, if any sea view - partial was stretching it! The food was consistently excellent! Enjoyed the Steak House and Duomo. No really long wait time. Pools were very crowded, even the small volleyball one. Not easy if you want to swim laps. Had to ask three times to get a bag of coffee delivered. It seemed like the cleaning lady and the ones who fill the fridge didn’t know whose responsibility it was. The lowest rating has to go to the 'free shuttle'. After waiting over half an hour the Destinations rep eventually put it on another bus that went to non Riu properties first. Again the return journey was held up by people coming late. Not the best system! Would I return? Only if the price was reasonable.
