A great hotel
A wonderful experience. Lovely hotel, professional, caring Reception and great staff everywhere. The free bus to Funchal is an added bonus!

Lovely Hotel
Friendly & helpful staff, very clean throughout the hotel, the room was spacious & the bed was very comfortable. Food was plentiful & good especially breakfast. It's very hilly outside the hotel so be aware but a courtesy bus takes you into Funchal. The sunbeds could be more comfortable

10 days of relaxation.
We had a fantastic break and there was nothing to criticise as everything was positive. Everything was spotless and cleaned daily. The rooms were spacious and had everything we needed. The showers were quality and had loads of pressure. Everything worked. The food was excellent with ample choice - something for everyone. Likewise there was a good section of drinks and cocktails. There was always a member of staff to serve and queuing was kept to a minimum. The hotel staff were helpful and polite without exception. The main pools were cleaned and tested daily. One was warmer than the other which for us, was a positive, as it ment one was always available for a good swim. We highly recommend The RIU Madeira and we would definitely consider returning or booking another hotel in the RIU chain.

AS EVER A TRULY AMAZING STAY, EVERYTHING YOU COULD WISH FOR IN A HOTEL
We have been staying at this hotel since Christmas 2010. We always stay for over two weeks Christmas and New Year, and are now here again for a birthday celebration. Everyone of the staff in the hotel go out of their way to welcome us back with open arms, nothing is too much trouble and everything is done with a big smile. The hotel and grounds are immaculate and very clean, the food is plentiful, fresh and attention to detail in presentation. The beds are extra comfy, extra pillows available on request. We had dinner in the speciality restaurant the night of my birthday, the food is very good also the wines are excellent. We had a great evening spent with special friends making many happy memories. We highly recommend this hotel and would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff and the management for everything they did to ensure we have a great time in our “second home”.

Great location but worst service
Madeira is a great place and a natural marvel. We thoroughly enjoyed our time outside of the Hotel. As far as the stay itself, I have to say it was not the best. I did not expect RIU staff to be this bad. I had heard great things but this could be only this location. From day 1, the AC did not work and response was "open the door". We did not go there to be told that opening the door is better. Also they mentioned they do not switch on AC until May or something. That does not make sense. There is no concept of customer service in the hotel or anywhere in Madeira except for a few. The staff in the restaurant were inflexible or gave curt responses when we asked for something. The answer is always a " NO"....The guys or gals did not want to do anything and went on trying to convince us to eat what he had already made....this happened almost everyday. Service staff outside in the open ( near the pool) would not switch on the heat as they would just say I dont know or I have to call someone ....Goal of the hotel staff is to make it easy and comfortable. Unfortunately this was not the case here or they are not used to providing great customer service. The service staff here were very grumpy and the worst. There were a couple of good one in the front desk but overall service was a Zero. I am not sure I will come back here unless someone has a better experience.
