A wonderful holiday
We had an amazing 10 night stay at the hotel. We had a very comfortable twin room with a lovely hammock on the balcony. The food was varied and of excellent quality. We used all 3 a la carte restaurants and enjoyed them all, particularly the oriental. We queued for 30/40 minutes to book the a la cartes which wasn't an issue and we have experienced this system at another 5 star hotel in Mexico. The staff are absolutely amazing, all so friendly and helpful. They work very hard and are a credit to the hotel. The entertainment staff were excellent, particularly the 2 guys who do the aqua gym and the fiesta night. The pools are lovely and the beach is wonderful. There is seaweed but it is cleared on most days. We enjoyed all of the entertainment. The Saturday night fiesta party was so much fun. At weekends numerous local Mexicans stay at the hotel so it does get busy but they very friendly and are mostly families. We had a wonderful time and the trip was amazing value. We would return.

Lack of amenities/falsely advertised...base line staff nice.
No restaurants except buffet (which was good). Base line staff was AWESOME, management was AWFUL. We had problems with management (restaurants are non-existent), they have a long hot wait while standing for a "separate" dining room which only accommodated 50 people per night. When mentioned that were told "That's corporate policy" The concierge was also rude/abrasive and flat out REFUSED to call Amstar to arrange our return pick-up. ALL other resorts do this...but she would not as it "wasn't her job" Be prepared to make all your own calls/spa services as this lady was only concerned with booking things she would get a commission from. Thank goodness the front desk helped or we would have had big problems. Nightly entertainment was pretty lame. Pretty, clean property.

We loved our stay at Allegro
Lets start by saying this is a budget all inclusive hotel, and for that I couldnt fault it! The best thing is the staff who work ridiculously hard and with a smile on their faces. We tipped many who made our stay enjoyable. There was an issue with our first room and by the next morning we moved. The hotel is situated in Playacar which is a gated community, very safe to go for walks or runs, and a 30 min walk into Playa del carmen or 200 pesos for a taxi. We walked in and caught a taxi back (150 pesos). There is only one buffet restaurant for lunch and another for dinner. 3 A la carts but the system to book isnt great, you have to queue up at 9am to get a table and its not guaranteed this is the only thing that lets the hotel down, we only managed to get into one during our 10 night stay. We found the buffet food brilliant, a little repetitive but we always found something nice to eat. Cant fault the quality, favourites were Paella with shrimp, the steak was divine, a variety of taco's on a regular basis, breakfast omelette with chorizo, honey straight from the honeycomb. It gets busier at weekends when locals stay, a lively atmosphere, I'd say 80% Mexican, and the rest USA Canada and Europe. Don't let this put you off, the locals are a lively but polite bunch. The beach is huge, plenty of sunbeds, you can find a place to relax, more pleasant than by the pool because of the breeze, although the sea was quite choppy, not good for snorkelling as nothing to see. They make an effort to clear the seaweed after a particularly rough tide. Beach traders come and go but clear off after one polite "no thanks". We found 2 pools, one with music, pool zumba and games and one quieter one. the swim up bar was great. The bar staff work very hard and providing you with all inclusive drinks, favourites were the frozen Pina colada and the mojito's, water always available, tip is to bring a thermo cup or bottle for your drinks or water and help yourself. There are no straws so either bring your own reusable or do without as they aren't good for the planet. Entertainment was ok, some nights better than others, the Mexican night was amazing and not to be missed. The nightclub wasn't great, only 1 speaker worked and it was Latino music only. It would be better if this opened straight after the show finished (not 30 mins after) and played a mix of Latino and western music. There are wildlife, so you'll be sharing your patio with Iguanas and the grounds with other creatures. We didn't experience any mosquitos at all, maybe due to the wind. Its a shame as there are plans to knock it down and rebuild a more modern resort. We loved how rustic the hotel was with the thatched roofs.

Loved variety
I really loved this resort. The only complaint is the water pressure but other than that it was amazing
