Ugh, my boyfriend and I rented through Aston at Kona By the Sea. Avoid at all costs if you have allergies, asthma, lung issues or easily get migraines. The mold and mildew is terrible in these units. The staff was great. The ocean front was amazing! Loved Big Island-got to see the volcano but wouldn’t stay here again.

Jul 14, 2025View is beautiful but dated and cleanliness a problem
When we arrived, Luann in the office greeted us warmly. We were given shell leis, chocolates and a bottle of wine to celebrate our anniversary and our son’s graduation. Thoughtful touches for sure. Overall, the property is dated but compounded by the problems with cleaning. We arrived to an apartment with fruit flies, dead flies under the sink, a strong odor of rotting food and old food in the dishwasher. We immediately called the front desk and talked with Luann who profusely apologized and sent up someone with the rollaway bed we requested and some cleaning supplies to help with the fruit flies (we were told this is “fruit fly season”). The staff person randomly sprayed around the kitchen. We asked if they had anything specific for fruit flies and she said no, there wasn’t anything they could do. We’ve had fruit flies at home and have used apple cider vinegar and dish soap to treat the problem. We left the property to go to the grocery store to get some items to get rid of the fruit flies and throughout our stay it helped with the situation. Luann had offered to tentatively move us to another apartment pending availability as well. After my husband and I doing some cleaning and airing out the apartment, we decided to stay since the view was beautiful (apartment 404). Be aware of the cleaning fee; we had housekeeping in and they did not vacuum (pile of sand still left on shag carpet), empty the trash or replace shower gel etc in second bathroom. The primary bathroom is tiny and the shower is full of soap scum. The office staff waived our fees because of all the problems we had which is great but overall I definitely would not stay at this property again.

We must have been shown the worst unit
A travel agent picked this location for us. We were traveling with a teenager and looking for a place to be active. In 90 minutes we waited for check-in time, we only saw 2 separate guests who were well into their 80's. The unit had a window by the front door that showed a tangle of dusty TV and electronic wires, the guest/kid bedroom had cheap metal framed beds and I don't recall any nightstand, all the furniture in the Dining and Living Room were hard wood - maybe a Tiki style. Not a single soft surface. My son described it as dismal. Not what we had traveled so far for. Nothing much to walk to and no beach to access from this location. Even if we had been lucky enough to have been shown one of the nice units on the website, it just wasn't the active situation we were hoping for.

Lovely stay in Aston Kona By The Sea. Spent 4 days in condo #319. Staff was excellent and helpful with explaining everything about the hotel. Room was fully stocked with all kitchen utensils and very clean. One bedroom, two bath. Had a problem with one of the showers and was immediately fixed. Nice view of the ocean. Has air conditioning although it wasn’t needed. Only quirky thing about the hotel is the security codes getting into the resort and elevator. Long and confusing . Looking forward to our next visit. Have stayed at other Aston resort hotels on other islands and found this one was just as nice. Couldn’t use the pool or jacuzzi because they were being renovated, but was finished the day we left and it looked great. Around 1.7 miles to town, so a long walk.

Beautiful Property
Beautiful property. Everything was well kept. Condo was updated with everything we needed. We made meals there everyday while we were there. Toaster, coffee maker, wine glasses, and even a crockpot. Towels and beach towels were provided. Washer and dryer are in the condo as well. Beautiful view of the ocean.
