Great family resort
Spent 8 nights here with my husband and 4 teenagers May 29-June 6. Check in was quick, room was clean and everything worked fine. Grounds at this resort are stunning, very well maintained. Unfortunately sargassum was the worst we’ve ever seen but staff worked hard to clean up what they could. We were still able to swim with the turtles right on the beach, very amazing experience. Spent most of our days at Tropical pool, the entertainment staff there are by far the best out of all the pools. Unfortunately I can’t remember all the names but Manual Cervantes and Ari are two I do. The entire group of them were fun, engaging and interactive. There’s activities throughout the day at the pool and sometimes beach, we enjoyed the water aerobics, Zumba, Spanish lessons and various games. They also had beach volleyball, water polo, stretching, bingo, ect. Buffets are average buffets, decent selection and we always found things we enjoyed. Ramon Cabrieles at Caribe buffet was fantastic. Knew our drink orders after first visit, cups were never empty. No food is allowed out of eating areas which keeps animals away and everything clean. A la carte restaurants are really good. We ate at Kyoto, Sante Fe, Rodizio, Brassiere, and Tokyo. Shows were fun at Tokyo and Kyoto, service was good at all and food was really good at all. Luis Alberto Morales Bustos, a manager at Caribe reception was extremely helpful when we needed support on a previous trip. Great customer service and is a big reason we will be returning to this resort. Biggest negative of this resort is no functional app. Previous resort had one and it was so nice. You could instantly see activity schedule, buffet hours, interactive map, show schedule, ability to make/change dinner reservations, ect. It sure would help being able to see information all in one spot, especially for first time guests. Resort is large so expect to do lots of walking. Theres a double decker bus that runs till 2:00am (I believe) that will take you from resort to resort, but we enjoy the walking. Had zero issues with getting chairs at anytime of the day at pool or beach. They received a large order of them before we arrived which seems to have fixed the chair game issues. No resort will ever be perfect, but Barcelo comes pretty close for us. We will definitely be returning next Spring.

Family Vacation
Overall trip a massive resort. Amazing beach. Food during breakfast was very good cause of choices. If you eat lunch at buffets they were not fresh or hot. Captain Morgan grill was our go to for lunch. Dinners at restaurants were some wonderful and others was not even good at all. Overall service and cleanliness at this resort was magnificent.

Great visit again!
our second stay at this lovely resort. Beautifully maintained grounds, lovely resort, fun pool and wonderful beach. Great food and drinks. Other than a glitch with the AC in one of our 2 rooms it was another great trip.

Really great stay with premium level
Got a junior suite at Caribe and had a great time checking out all the speciality restaurants, free 1-hr access to hydrotherapy spa, sailing and checking out pools. It was above our expectations. Great value for a great stay!

Shocking Experience: Kids Selling Drugs by the Pool
I’ve traveled a lot over the years, and I have to say, my recent stay at Barcelo Maya Caribbean was one of the most shocking experiences I’ve had at any resort. We were there for a week-long vacation, hoping for a relaxing family trip, but what we encountered left us deeply concerned for the safety and atmosphere of this place. What really caught us off guard was how blatant the drug activity was—groups of teenagers openly hanging around the pool and beach areas, approaching guests, and trying to sell drugs. It wasn’t subtle; it felt like it was happening right in front of everyone, like it was a normal part of the scene. One afternoon, I was sitting by the pool while my kids were playing nearby, and I saw a group of teenagers walk up to a couple, offering something quietly and then laughing and moving on to another group. At first, I thought I must be seeing it wrong, but then it happened again—and again. It’s incredibly unsettling when you’re trying to enjoy a vacation with your family, and you see this kind of behavior happening so openly. It made me question the kind of environment this resort is encouraging and how safe it really is, especially for families. I ended up reporting this to the front desk, expecting some level of concern or action, but the reaction was honestly just a shrug. The staff seemed uninterested and unwilling to address the issue, almost as if they’d seen it happen a hundred times before and didn’t think it was worth following up on. There was no sense of urgency, no assurance that it would be dealt with, and no follow-up from management. It left us feeling completely unheard and honestly a bit unsafe. We tried to make the best of the trip, but after a few more days of the same thing happening, it became clear that this resort is not a safe or family-friendly place. The idea that kids and teens can sell drugs openly around the pool area without any staff intervention is beyond unacceptable. I would strongly caution anyone considering a stay here, especially families, to think twice. It’s just not worth the risk.
