  Family trip

  Overall was ok , but needs improvement on how quickly they respond questions before you get there. Also they should let you know that some amenities are not included on what you pay or you need to make reservations ahead of time probably before you get to the place if not you will be eating at the buffet all the time or outside

  Bad expirence

  Title / Título: Deeply Disappointed – This Is Not the Mexico I Once Loved Profundamente decepcionada – Este no es el México que solía amar English: I recently stayed at Barcelo Maya Colonial, and I left feeling extremely disappointed and disheartened. It truly felt like we weren’t even in Mexico. The kindness, warmth, and exceptional hospitality that have always defined the Mexican experience were completely missing. And I don’t say that lightly — it felt like no one was allowed to smile or be friendly. The staff seemed indifferent and cold, as if genuine customer service no longer matters. Let’s talk about the room: it had a strong musty odor, like mold or humidity. There was visible dust and even cobwebs — clearly not properly cleaned or maintained. Now the food: we stayed 7 nights and could only get dinner reservations for 3 nights, always at 9:30 PM. Every other day we had no choice but to eat at the buffet, where the food was poor in both quality and variety. Most of the dishes were cold, and the options were extremely limited: always chicken, some kind of fish, and absolutely no quality meat cuts — not even lamb or beef. To make it worse, the buffet lines were ridiculously long every day. This is not the Mexico I used to know — a place known for its outstanding service and warmth. I do not recommend staying at Barcelo. Save your money and go somewhere that truly values its guests. Español: Me hospedé recientemente en el Barcelo Maya Colonial y salí completamente decepcionada y desilusionada. Sentí como si no estuviéramos en México. La amabilidad, calidez y hospitalidad que siempre han caracterizado al pueblo mexicano brillaron por su ausencia. Y no lo digo a la ligera — parecía como si estuviera prohibido sonreír o ser amable. El personal se mostró frío e indiferente, como si el servicio al cliente ya no importara. Sobre la habitación: tenía un fuerte olor a humedad, como a moho. Había polvo visible e incluso telarañas — claramente no estaba limpia ni bien mantenida. La comida fue otra gran decepción. Nos quedamos 7 noches y solo pudimos reservar en los restaurantes 3 veces, siempre a las 9:30 p.m. El resto de los días tuvimos que ir al buffet, donde la comida era de muy mala calidad y con muy poca variedad. La mayoría de los platos estaban fríos y siempre lo mismo: pollo, algún tipo de pescado y ningún corte de carne decente — ni cordero ni res. Para colmo, las colas del buffet eran larguísimas todos los días. Este no es el México que yo conocía — un país reconocido por su excelente trato y servicio. No recomiendo quedarse en Barcelo. Guarden su dinero y elijan un lugar que de verdad valore a sus huéspedes.

  First Time Stay at this Resort

  Great resort and service with tons of stuff to do. Restaurants were great. Buffets need a little more variety but were fine. Rooms were good and kept very clean.

  Not someplace I'd return to

  The resort was okay at best. Staff is hit or miss - lots of them don't know much about the resort and you can't get answers to your questions. We both speak fluent Spanish so it wasn't a language issue. The food is average at best. The Italian restaurant was terrible at the Colonial. We were at a premium level so that allowed us to eat dinner at the Palace which was definitely where the better restaurants were. Our room was a great fit for our needs - we had a suite with a separate living area for my daughter and her own bathroom. Overall the resort is well maintained but could use some updates in the rooms. This resort was not the caliber of resort we are used to and we were disappointed in the service and food.

  The Beach was beautiful!!

  We recently stayed at this resort and overall had a great experience, with a few ups and downs. The property itself is absolutely beautiful — well maintained, lush, and right on one of the most stunning beaches we've ever seen. The beach was a true highlight: clean, spacious, and perfect for relaxing or taking long walks. You can’t beat the view or the atmosphere. The reserved à la carte dinners were excellent. Each restaurant offered a unique menu with delicious food and great presentation. The service during these meals was attentive and professional, and we really looked forward to them each evening. On the other hand, the buffet left a lot to be desired. The food options were fairly repetitive and not as fresh or flavorful as we hoped. It also lacked variety compared to other resorts we've visited. Service in the buffet area was noticeably lacking as well — it often took a long time to get drinks or have plates cleared, and staff didn’t seem as engaged. Overall, the resort itself is beautiful, and we had a relaxing stay. If they could improve the buffet experience and service in that area, it would easily be a five-star destination.
