Frustration, then the best trip ever
I have been visiting the Riviera Maya for 25 years. This hotel provided the most frustrating experience in that time, and then the best. Con: Check in and restaurant reservation In research, I noticed many travelers complain about the antiquated and time-consuming check-in. They were right. I have never experienced such frustration with a hotel. We waited in line at our original booking, the sibling resort Barcelo Maya Palace, for one hour before learning we had been moved across the complex to the adults-only Riviera. At the Riviera, we waited in line another 45 minutes before checking in. Barcelo did not charge more to upgrade to the adults-only resort. Then booking the restaurants, which travelers advised to do immediately upon check-in, took another hour. Pro: Everything else Beach -- Stunning, beautiful, clean. Watch for rocks though. Bring water socks/shoes. Plenty of chairs, never had trouble finding a spot among the many palm trees. Pools - Beautiful, loved the swim-up bar. Staff - As always, the service shined. All were friendly, kind, and appreciative of tips. Room - Beautiful, clean, spacious. Buffet - Variety and quality. Anyone who complains, feel free to ignore them. I have visited AI resorts for 25 years and the buffet selection was the best. A la carte restaurants -- All were fantastic. Really enjoyed the Japanese and French. Drinks - Customary AI quality. If it's not strong enough for you, ask for an accompanying shot. Staff will make you anything. ***********Staff at AI resorts earn little. Please tip as generously as possible. If you can afford this place, you can afford to tip!

Great vacation destination
Cannot beat their beautiful beach access. Friendly and attentive staff with good food options at the buffet. Utilize the great food in the restaurants. Agave is our favorite!

Discrimination at Barcelo Riviera Maya hotels
Discrimination at Barcelo Riviera Maya hotels My wife and I stayed at this resort for two weeks starting January 5, 2026. This is a complex of 6 hotels of which middle 4 (ours included) have a right of use buffet restaurants, beach grills, bars and a la carte restaurants of all 4. There was an event last weekend of our stay called “Girls just wanna have weekend” for lesbians. Barricades started to be raised on Thursday afternoon which effectively cut of our access to our favorite restaurant and made our walk to other one right beside it 4 times longer. Hotel personnel guarded these gates. At first, we tried to ignore them since it was a clear breach of our rights stated in our booking contract. Management later also hired security guards who were quite aggressive (guard chasing and preventing my diabetic wife trying to go to washroom). While regular guests had limited movement in the resort, event attendees had freedom throughout the whole complex. It not only violated their own policy (stay at one play at four) but in my opinion was illegal since it was discrimination against one group of paying guests in favor of another. There were other problems which also affected us, for example women crowded not only ladies’ toilets but men’s as well. Very often I went to men’s and there was a lineup of women inside. The whole event could and should have been organized in a different way which would not affect other guests.

Great Property for an Inclusive Stay
We stayed at the Riviera Maya for the Brandi Carlile festival. The property is beautiful! Extremely well maintained with wonderful staff, gorgeous pools and views and great alcohol selections. The buffet food was just average, which might be the product of attending a large music festival. The restaurants at Riviera Maya were amazing! I would and will go again.
