Amazing Hotel, Beach and Staff
My wife and I spent a few days at the Catalonia Royal Tulum hotel to celebrate her birthday. We were extremely pleased with our stay, and it exceeded all our expectations. We will not hesitate to recommend to others and look forward to staying again. Service/Staff: the best part was the great service from the staff who are genuinely customer oriented and motivated with amazing attitude. Please be mindful that many wonderful workers deserve tips, and we saw very few customers giving them. We are grateful with absolutely each person at the hotel but wanted to mention a few names (see full list at the bottom). Beach: it was pristine with powdery sand, calm ocean, light breeze and no sargassum at the time of our visit (mid-January). Unlike other parts in the Riviera Maya, the ocean remained swimmable even during a stormy and windy day. There were a few vendors, but they were quite respectful and not pushy at all (I am glad they are allowed to work), and overall, we felt very safe despite having some beach clubs nearby (normal precaution do not leave expensive items/money unattended). People were very respectful of beach chairs/beds, and they did not remove towels when leaving unattended for some time (e.g. when grabbing lunch). Food and Drinks: great in terms of variety, but more importantly, high quality. We had no stomach/digestion issues. Also, it was very easy to make reservations for the different dinner restaurants available onsite and we were very happy to see Mexican options. Premises: Rooms were very clean and gardens well maintained by staff. We loved the architectural Mayan vibe surrounded by rainforest, mangrove forest, onsite cenote and the cute Coatis. The hotel is well designed in a sense that rooms are away from lobby or noisy areas Activities: Please note the hotel is not a party crazy place. However, they have the typical entertainment staff by the pool and beach with different activities such as yoga, contests and so on. Water equipment such as snorkel mask and free catamaran ride are also included. Night shows were good, although they cancelled a few such as the pool party due to chilly weather at night (do not forget to bring a light sweater in case the temperature drops especially early in the morning and at night). Couple of caveats for travelers: -suggesting avoiding showing up last minute at the buffet as the staff is prioritizing clean-up and they do not treat you with the same care (on one occasion they never brought us the drinks we ordered and gave us annoyed looks). -Rooms are surrounded by trees, so they do not get much of sunlight and at times could be very dark inside. -Lobby, rooms and pool/beach are connected by cobble stone and wood bridge pathways, so keep in mind in case of limited mobility or wearing high heels. - Different people will try to offer the Privilege Package or Catalonia plans, however, we did not find them to be pushy and they understand your decision without much questioning. For us, an Italian lady approached to us one morning in our way to the beach (area between the buffet and the pool) to invite us to a session to hear about these plans while offering a free breakfast at the B-Loved Lounge & Restaurant. We simply replied back that we were not interested since we only had a couple of days and wanted to enjoy the beach as much as possible, to which she responded very politely that she understood, being very respectful and not pushy at all. -Lastly, do not fall for an upsell to get the front tables at the Rauxa restaurant (show), the hostess was pushy offering a bottle for purchase, although on several occasions we told her that we did not mind sitting in the back, she preferred to ignore us and continue offering us the most expensive bottles on the menu (Moët & Chandon Impérial Brut, etc) until we agreed to a cheaper Spanish cava to get rid of her. In addition, the couple sitting next to us did not understand the consumption was extra, so they were very disappointed and quite upset when receiving a bill (please note any other tables are fine, and you are still entitled to your drinks as it is an all inclusive hotel), we picked a cheap one just for the experience, but in our opinion not worth it at all. Big round of applause to the staff below: - Guest Service: Joseph - Front Desk: Nadia - Bell Boys: Miller - Bar by the pool/beach (Tequila): The two Elias (the best margaritas in our opinion!) - Snack restaurant (Sorrento): Rosario - Beach Waitresses: Georgina and Leidy - Lobby Bar (Margarita): Enedino and Javier - Buffet (La Palapa): Quetzabel - Restaurant Tao Kat (Asian): Antonio - Restaurant Adelita (Mexican): David and Alondra (hostess) - Restaurant Rauxa (dinner show): Mauricio (waiter) and all the entertainment team (Diego, Jaydid, Erik, Eddy) - Water Activities: Franco, Carlos & Marco

Lovely, Relaxing Mexican Themed Resort
This was the first time we have been to the Catalonia Royal Tulum - Adults Only resort. We found the resort beautiful, loved that it was smaller, and had more of a Mexican feel to the facility. The beach was fantastic and had some decent snorkeling. The staff did a great job of keeping the beach clear of seaweed and our accommodations were very nice. While everything here is on a smaller scale (pool, shows) than larger resorts in the area, they were still enjoyable and never crowded. No issues, with dinner bookings, or having to get up early for loungers, etc. While we had a wonderful time at the Catalonia Royal Tulum we did have a real issue with the lack of an evening buffet option. Having only a la carte options for evening meals was a problem for us, as we got tired of having the same meal options over and over again during our stay. We were there for the resort's Sunday Only Mexican buffet though and enjoyed it immensely. We understand that it was the last time it was being offered, which is a real shame, as it was one of the highlights of our stay. Unfortunately, even though the Catalonia Royal Tulum - Adults Only is a lovely resort, we found the lack of an evening buffet option, and the mediocre quality of the a la carte meals enough of an issue that we will not be returning.

Splendid Epicurean elegance
It’s our second time here, and it was as good as the first! The hotel staff are incredible at meticulously keeping the place spotless and being very welcoming and kind. A special shoutout to Abagail and Isabelle who were our beach servers: we had a bottle of Mexican sparkling wine served right on the beach! The food in any restaurant (especially the buffet) is out of this world. Truly top! I do have to say, the seaweed can sometimes be a little intense. I really hope that the hotels get together and find a solution.

Mediocre at best
Do not upgrade-there is little value in this. Food service is slow, very inconsistent, little communication. Overall we observed changes and not for the better. 3 of 4 had gastrointestinal issues, room is never ready by 3 -disorganized staff-left doesn’t speak to the right. And then they try to sell you a membership without even asking how your stay is going.
