Massive Renovation for the Next Year - Go Elsewhere
The resort is divided into two sections (Grand Riviera and Grand Sunset). The entire Sunset portion is under construction. We are not talking about small renovations. Half of the resort is going through massive renovations through November as they turn Sunset into a vacation Club. Because the two sections are connected the entire lengthwise of the complex, you see and hear the construction and unsightly mess. In November, supposedly they are going to start on the Riviera side. This affects the number of pools, bars and restaurants offered. No one should be paying normal price for this resort. We are incredibly frustrated that we were not informed of these major disruptions prior to booking especially since there is no deduction in the price for the week. My mother has been at this resort 11 times and I have been 8. They removed the VIP program that used to reward loyalty for repeat customers. Concierge did not respond to two emails sent prior to our arrival (one in June and one in July) and we were not informed of the massive construction project until we arrived and were checking in. When we asked bout upgrading our room to a closer location to the pools, we were told we could do so for an additional $60/day. There was no improvement in the type of room, just location. We were also told it would be very difficult to find a room with double beds and we would most likely need to accept the offered king bed for the week. We pointed out this is not how you treat returning customers especially when it’s their 11th visit. The representative’s response was, “Sorry. We have a change in policies”. When we told him for several years we could have chosen other resorts for the same price and we overlooked the deteriorating appearance of the pool and lobby areas, he was still not empathetic in any way. We eventually got another representative a couple hours later who tried to be accommodating and moved our room a bit closer and found double beds. This trip is quite disappointing with the constant noise and unsightly mess, the lack of quality in the food and the resort being only 1/4 full of its past capacity; however, most of the staff are still very nice and appreciative of any type of gratuity.

Mounds of sea weed on the beach ruined our experience!
We went as a family and stayed in Grand Rivera Princess in July 2025. The food was OK with so many items in the buffet, but nothing really stood out. Very mediocre taste. The only restaurant that stood out is the BBQ place on the beach. Their rice and chicken was very delicious. The room service is good for fish and rice. The Pina colada are delicious. They put pork in almost everything! Their stuffs are very friendly. The resort looks OK, not new, needs to have retouch in several areas near the pool. You get to see many coatimundis and deer. There was rotten egg smell everywhere, it took several days for me to adjust. The smell comes from the rotten sea weed. First two days we could not swim in the ocean due to hesitation about the sea weed. The last 3 days we were desperate and walked over mounds of seaweed in the beach and went to the ocean. The sea water was also brown due to the sea weed. The shows are top notch. Loved them. Among the ala carte restaurant, the thai place was good. We did the Akumal monkey sanctuary and swimming with the turtle and it was a good experience.

Not 5* luxury but great holiday
Hotel is definitely not 5* luxury and is in need of updating, which is currently taking place, so building work underway, which we were not told about prior to booking by Love Holidays. On a positive note, the service from the staff at the riviera snack buffet bar (Mama Mia) for breakfast and lunch was 1st class and made up for it. Absolom (Absolutely) and Roberto made everything perfect for me and my 16yr old daughter, always smiling and ready to top up my coffee or wine (candied cherries for my daughter) Idelfonso and Lorenzo were also great. The pool bar staff at the bottom pool worked really hard making cocktails all day. Saul, Jonathan, Maria and the rest of the team. Rooms cleaned daily. Fresh towels daily. Cleaners were friendly and smily. The food was always hot and a good selection everyday. No issues with upset tummies. We didn't upgrade to platinum, no need to. Had everything we wanted and no extra charges.

Love our stay- can’t wait to go back
Took our family of 6 in July 2025 to visit Playa Del Carmen and we stayed at the beautiful Grand Princess Riviera. I admit I was nervous when I saw some reviews leading up to it, and knowing about the sargassum issue, but it couldn’t have been lovelier. The staff were so friendly and prompt. Never had to wait for any request. The food was delicious (though ironically I wish there had been more Mexican food at the buffet), and we loved trying the different restaurants each night. Mamma Mia was our favorite. We are not alcohol drinkers but we couldn’t get enough of their non-alcoholic fresadas, piña coladas, mangadas, and virgin strawberry mojitos. We loved the beautiful grounds and the property. Is it brand new ? No. But it’s beautiful. And the current construction on the other side- I didn’t even notice it. The pools were so refreshing , though a little cooler water would have been better given the extreme heat, but you can’t help the natural heat from the sun! My only complaint about the property is how early they close the pools -especially having a swim up room. 8 pm is way too early. All I wanted to do was take a nightly dip in the pool after dinner but that is not allowed. Perhaps given the issue with the sargassum they could lighten up that rule a little since the beach is not swimmable. We did go to Cozumel for a day trip and loved the water there. It’s not the resorts fault that this is happening and they made their best effort to help us navigate it. I would definitely come here again and loved sharing it this time with my kids. A swim up room is the best way to go and the free ice cream in the family club was a bonus! Would recommend this place again and again.
