Very accommodating
Hotel staff was very helpful and supportive. I called before we went explaining that i would be ordering my own food for my room for religious reasons, and they ordered a microwave to be sent to my room. When we arrived, the microwave was the first thing delivered to our room, even before they brought our bags up. The only unexpected thing was that they charged $70 per day for valet parking.

Riding on its reputation - which is no longer deserved
I've been to the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki a couple of times, but after this summer's stay, I'm not sure I'd go back. First, the good: The resort's grounds are beautiful and well-kept. Its section of beach is also beautiful, and if you've signed-up for an Atlantis submarine tour (definitely recommended) the boarding jetty is conveniently out back. The bad: Both times that we checked-in (we stayed at the Hilton for a couple of days both before and after a cruise) the ladies at the check-in desk were brusque to the point of being rude. They kept trying to push room upgrades on us, and were annoyed when we politely declined. When I joked that they should give us a free upgrade because we were there to get married and because it would be a nice gesture for Canadians like us who are concerned about hostility from the US government, we were met with a frosty stare. Nice customer service. Not. The rooms were also terribly dated and the hot water plumbing is appalling. For our first stay, they put us in the Tapa Tower. The room was big, and well sound-proofed (there's an outdoor bar in the lobby with a very loud classic rock cover band playing every night, but we couldn't hear it as long as our balcony door was closed) but the last time it had been updated was probably 1982 and it had a musty smell that took a couple of hours of airing-out with the balcony door open to get rid of. The worst was the the time it took to get hot water in the shower: minimum 5 minutes, very often 10 between the time you turn the hot water knob and the time the first tepid drops think about appearing. Not a word of exaggeration here. You've got to fire-up the shower then walk away for 10 minutes before you can think of getting in if you don't want to freeze your nards off. On our second stay after the cruise, they put us in the Diamond Tower. The room was a bit smaller, and was probably last redecorated in 1988. This one only took 5 minutes for the hot water to warm up. The cleaning staff clearly weren't vacuuming in this tower every day. In terms of the pools: Don't bother. Families park themselves in the deck chairs first thing in the morning and stay there until dark. They never leave. Ever. We even saw one woman changing her kid's overflowing diaper on a deck chair rather than go to the washroom like a civilized person and risk losing it. If it's water you want, go swim in the ocean: it's warm, clean and even on a busy afternoon you'll be able to find a spot for your towel on the sand. Hungry? Get off the resort. The prices are sky-high for profoundly mediocre fare. This is true whether you're dining at the higher-end Bali Oceanside (when it started raining, they ignored our request to be moved off the patio and we had to pirate another table under cover) or Tropics Bar by the beach. Case in point: one day having lunch at Tropics I ordered a glass to gingerale. It cost $7 American. Seven bucks for a glass of pop is outrageous, but when it came there was no flavour - merely the barest memory of ginger - and almost no carbonation. I told the waiter that the mix was probably off; he took it away but came back saying that the bartender said the mix was the way it should be. I sent it back and luckily they didn't charge me for it. Whatever you do, eat off the resort. The Hilton's really got to get its act together because there are too many other places on the Waikiki strip that people can choose from. I, for one, won't be going back.

Terrible stay at Rainbow Tower
I was really looking forward to my stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, but my experience in the Rainbow Tower as was modernised recently but it was incredibly disappointing. The rooms felt neglected, with thick dust wherever it could collect, long hairs left blocked in the sinks and bathtub, and bed linen that was never changed during my stay despite asking and requiring to be changed at least every 4 days. Public areas weren’t any better the carpets in the hallways were consistently sandy and dirty no matter the time of day. The pool was filthy, and it was almost impossible to get a sunbed; when a bird defecated in the pool and I reported it, nothing was done. The property also has a pigeon problem due to poor upkeep and food being left uncollected / binned. While staff were polite and listened to my concerns, no action was ever taken whether about the pool or the cleanliness of the room. WiFi barely worked in my room, construction noise was constant, and the $50+ per night resort fee felt like a poor value since many facilities were unusable due to cleanliness. One of the supposed “perks” was DVD rentals, but there were only about 30 outdated titles to choose from. the quality of food on offer in the restaurant we tried was poor. Overall, the resort felt neglected and far from the paradise it promises. If you’re visiting Waikiki, I’d recommend looking at other nearby resorts such as the Moana Surfrider or others along the beach that offer a much higher standard of cleanliness and service.
