Oct 26, 2025This hotel is a shadow of its former self, but still a decent place to stay in Cartagena.
I recently stayed at the Hyatt Cartagena for 5 nights. It was my third time staying at this property. The first time I stayed here was right after Covid, and I had the best time . The breakfast buffet was amazing, with delicious coffee and various local dishes. I loved my room, which was decorated in a really nice local style. The toiletries in the room were by the fabulous Colombian company Loto del Sur, and the staff always went above and beyond to insure that I had a good stay. For my second stay, I was invited to occupy a room in the newly constructed wing of the hotel. I was excited to be one of the first guests in this new part of the hotel. To my disappointment, the new rooms were designed to look like rooms in other Hyatts-- the charm and local flair were gone. The wonderful Loto del Sur toiletries had been replaced by the generic brand of products that appear in all the Hyatts in the U.S. For my most recent stay (in October 2025), I requested a room in the original part of the hotel. However, when I went to breakfast, I found that the entire breakfast area had been remodeled with a more modern look, and that the extensive breakfast had been streamlined, and aside from a few local fruits and hot food offerings, were in line with the breakfast buffets at other Hyatt hotels. I'm not sure if it's because Americans prefer eating the same things while staying at a Hyatt, or whether this was a cost saving measure for the chain, but I am not a fan. I always looked forward to the breakfast at this hotel, but now it is so lackluster that I will never have breakfast there again. The redesign of the lobby has diminished the local charm of the place. Do better Hyatt! Not all of your hotels have to look the same! Of course, the staff is still as wonderful as ever. That is the one saving grace of the place. And I like the old rooms. But I long for the days of small bottles of Loto del Sur products in the guest rooms and the delicious, extensive breakfast buffet. I will still stay at this hotel the next time I am in town, as I am a Hyatt credit card holder, but I will always long for the Hyatt Cartagena as it once was, not too long ago.

Beautiful views, great gym, excellent service. A very pleasant experience. Convenient location, lovely city. I would go back and stay there again.

Big birthday celebration
We had a great time for a friend's 50th birthday celebration. The Hyatt is definitely a nice place to stay while you are there.
