    Great place immersed in nature

Loved it. Great immersion with a natural area. beautiful environment. Lots of vegetation, cover, and wildlife. The birds and coatis are very habituated to humans. it is important to not feed them or leave any food out for them to grab. additionally, people need to haze(scare) them off. We clapped our shoes or hands together and chased them off multiple times and that is important for the animal's safety and for human safety. the animals need to be reminded to not get close to people. If you leave food or bags unattended the coatis will steal it. The staff also do a great job of hazing off the birds and coatis when notified. For the birds they also have other deterrents by the restaurants such as alarms and a raptor handler. The seafood restaurant was by far my favorite. the adult pool area cabanas are comfy. the beach area is shaded and plenty of space. No crowds anywhere. Room had a/c and a fan both worked great. The power went out once and they fixed it super quick and had no issues. Bats are also prominent so be cautious when walking at night and going up the stairs to rooms, also important to make noise and lots of body movement so the bats avoid hitting you on accident. Their dance, circus, and mariachi staff are very talented and did amazing shows! Would def come here again!

    Family of 12

Our family of 12 stayed here for a week. We travel extensively and the staff was the best we’ve ever experienced. Food was good but got a little tired of buffet. Best was the Mediterranean restaurant. None of us liked the Mexican restaurant. Nighttime entertainment was great. Snorkeling there was not good. Little beach was adequate though. Picture of beach was years ago before beach eroded. Pools amazing. It all worked out, but could not get thru to resort beforehand. We had some special requests about our Celebration of Life (which they did a wonderful special dinner and set up video for us). If you book thru the resort it’s better than a 3rd party in terms of requests. This also applied to our room requests. We had to have 2 beds in each room. Expedia could not guarantee. Just fyi. Took quite some time to resolve at check in. Our younger crowd had fun in the bar and disco. Everything super safe. Hubby really liked dive shop. Spa and massage- beware long steep stairs and no rail. Cheaper to book outside of resort for snorkel trips. We used Panga $60 pp, dock fee $40 ( negotiated). The Marine fee we did NOT pay and seems to be all over the place on cost. You pay part to the guy that books your trip,l($200) then pay cash to boat captain ($480). We got his name and number for next time. Beware: ATM NEVER WORKED. $40 to town is not worth it, so take lots of small bills for tips etc. You have a safe in your room. RoomsBuilding 18 best. Don’t think Royal is worth the cost. Chankanaab was really great, but bring your snacks, water. Very expensive with group of 12! Massage there was great, only $80. Hope this review helps someone! Great location for diving and snorkel trips.

    Nice hotel, decent beach

Probably due to economic constraints, the variety and quality of the food left room for improvement. Same for the night shows. Otherwise, the hotel was a good experience, we loved the adult pool with soft music, the grounds are nice and well kept, the rooms are large and comfortable, with efficient air conditioning. We would go back

    Unimpressed

I had always thought w the prices that Occidental charges and the size of the property they would be a great hotel. I was wrong. The property is clean and the rooms clean. Other than that it was a complete let down. Diving was a pain and thankfully we rented a car and had access to other diving. No storage for dive gear and no safe place to store gear near dock was a big minus in our travel plans. The lack of food options without reservations was a minus.

    Dissapointed

I always do the good , the bad and the ugly , so first the good. Without doubt the best thing are the staff, always smiling and helpful. Never had trouble finding sunbeds, and the grounds are kept immaculate. The rooms are clean and comfortable ( when everything works ..see the bad! ). Now the bad ! The rooms are in blocks with 2 upper floors and no elevators which is a real pain lumping 20kg cases up and down ( see the ugly ! ) The beach is not like in the broacher photos, apparently it got washed away a couple of years ago by a hurricane and is now very small and non existent in front of the pool as in the hotel photos. Also if you want to snorkel its better walking up the beach to the allegro where its much better , you can no longer go the other way to albertos or the ibrostar as its now impassable. You also cannot swim near the pier which fo me was very disappointing as this is where all the fish are whilst snorkelling. this is a very diving oriented hotel. Some of the food is very good ,and as long as you like fajitas you'll love the place as this was the main fair at least 5 of the 10 days we were there. I know we were in Mexico but for a apparent 5 star hotel more variety is needed. Now for the ugly The first room we were given , after lugging the 20kg cases up 2 flights of stairs already had a family in it !. so back down the stairs to reception where they gave us another room ,after lugging the cases up 2 more flights of stair we found it only had 1 bed ( me , the missus and teenage daughter ). Back to reception where they told up they would bring up a bed the the daughter, not what i wanted after traveling all day, For five days the aircon didn't work and after several attempts to fix it they swapped rooms, back down with the cases and up yet 2 more flights of stairs. 2 days later we couldn't get back in the room as they had cancelled the room keys, so back to reception ( the other end of the property and soaking wet ), by this time i was losing patients. The door keys they give you on a string around your wrist constantly need retying , my daughter lost hers one night and i handed several into the bar that I had found on the floor around the pool. These are chargeable for $58 if you lose them, needless to say I refused at checkout. In summery the staff made it a good holiday but I think there must be better options out there, and defiantly not a 5 star hotel.
