DO NOT BOOK NEXUS TOURS FOR ANYTHING !
Let me start by saying that you are in charge and you can make this vacation what you want it to be. We upgraded to premium when we booked . It was worth every penny. We had a veranda to enjoy the sunset in the evening. This is not a party resort . If you are looking to party, go somewhere else Food is good. Buffet is small but you can always find something. The resort is a fair distance from anywhere. Trip to Coco Beach will run you around $100US. Don’t bring CAD $. Bring greenback or colones which is local currency. DO NOT BOOK NEXUS TOURS FOR ROUND TRIP TRANSFER !! We pre booked and paid for the transfer. THEY NEVER SHOWED! We found out at the hotel they are unreliable and do this regularly. Thankfully we booked with Expedia and were able to get our money back. We paid close to $100 to get to the hotel. It should have been no more than $60 US. Hotel overall appears dated but rooms are clean. Staff is wonderful . Polite and professional. We travelled during rainy season . Yes it will rain. Plan on getting sun and pool time in the morning. Rain usually starts around 1 or 2 pm. Bring sunscreen! Bring aloe Vera. Bring rain poncho. Yes there is one umbrella in the room and you can call for transportation from the room to the lobby but we chose to walk, umbrella and poncho. This place has steps everywhere. If you have mobility issues this resort has many steps. It’s located on a hill. It does have many paths if you enjoy walking. As for the beach, bring water shoes.Ocean bottom is rocky. There is nowhere to sit on the beach. Keep in mind all beaches in Costa Rica are public. When you walk to the beach, be ready to be offered excursions and other services. These folks are very polite and are just trying to make a living. Overall, we enjoyed our trip. But like I said, this is not a party resort. It’s laid back.

Another great Barcelo owned resort
We celebrated our 10 year anniversary in Costa Rica. The staff was friendly and always willing to help. Even during the rainy season, the resort was beautiful and very relaxing. Would definitely stay here again!

THE REVIEWS LIED!
I saw some reviews that this hotel was like an 3!?!? HOW? Trust me!! Occidental Papagayo is a dream for adults seeking true relaxation. The staff are incredibly kind, the atmosphere is peaceful and quiet. There’s no overstimulation, just pure serenity! You can unwind by the pool or beach, then enjoy exotic excursions like rainforest hikes or hot springs. It’s the perfect blend of calm and adventure. If you need to recharge, this is the place.

Sad
Is run down, needs maintenance, needs to improve staff numbers and quality, food selection basic and heavily meet and cheese focused. Very little local fair.

Enjoyable Vacation
We had a wonderful time at this resort. The staff was always helpful and professional. This resort is older and very budget friendly so our expectations were exceeded!
