Rooms lack maintenance, food not great

Multitude of issues with the room without resolution. Safe doesn’t work, lack of hot water/pressure, shower enclosure floods bathroom, food not great, speciality restaurants ok, lacks towels. Worn and stained bedding. 4th time to Punta Cana. This one was very disappointing, over rated I think ratings are inflated by guests from countries with a low standard of living. 01: Problems with door lock, we did get it fixed 02: Safe buttons would not work O3: Water not very hot and almost 0 pressure but cold had lots of pressure 04: Shower enclosure leaks out of the shower and across the bathroom air to our hall, every time. 05: 3 of the 4 usb jacks were broken 06: Lacked towels (initially only given 2 bath towels and 1 small hand towel) 07: Food is not great at buffets also causes diarrhea even when being very careful avoiding high risk foods 08: Sheets are old and stained 09: Very poor pillows 10: Light on balcony doesn’t work. 11: Lamp was a fire hazard, with bad switch and spliced cord, we unplugged it. 12: Lack of front line staff that speak English.

High Prices, Very Little Thought for Guest Experience

I am currently staying at this hotel and paying approximately $5,600 for a suite — a price you would normally associate with a high-end, premium resort. Let me start with the positive: the staff is excellent. Every single person has been kind, attentive, and especially supportive with our family, as we travel with a person with a disability. Their care and professionalism are outstanding. Unfortunately, everything related to food and overall value is deeply disappointing. The food quality is far below what this price level should offer. It is repetitive, low quality, often looks reheated, and rarely feels freshly prepared. The most frustrating part is the obvious internal segregation. “Royal Level” and “First Club” guests receive visibly better, fresher, higher-quality meals, while standard guests are left with clearly inferior options. Honestly, it feels like we are eating whatever is left after the premium tiers are served. Paying luxury prices and feeling like a second-class guest is unacceptable. This is not about luxury or exclusivity — it’s about basic standards and respect. A $5,600 suite should never come with cafeteria-level food. It’s a shame, because the staff does everything right, but management decisions completely undermine the experience. Tto be fair, I want to clarify something important: the hotel also offers more affordable rooms, and for those price points, the overall service and food would probably feel acceptable. The real issue is value for money. Guests paying premium suite rates — like we are — receive exactly the same food and service level as the lowest categories. There is no differentiation in quality, which makes the experience feel extremely overpriced and poorly managed. Paying this kind of prices should come with a better standard, not the same basic offering.

Wonderful 2 weeks at the Occidental

We just returned from a fantastic 2 weeks at the Occidental in Punta Cana. We were impressed with the cleanliness of the hotel and the friendly staff. The beach location and beautifulwhite sand was just what we were looking for. All staff were super friendly, particularly Angel and Sandra at the beach buffet who provided excellent service. The selection of food at the main buffet was great. We like to try different food when we travel and particularly enjoyed the variety of seafood options, especially the grouper, salmon and shrimp dishes. The menus also included lots of delicious fresh vegetables, salads and fresh fruit. Rooms were spacious and comfortable and well stocked with what we needed. The animation team worked very hard did an excellent job. Would definitely consider returning to this hotel.
