Excellent environment, great value
I was originally attracted to this hotel because of its more modest environment with local flair. We were not disappointed. It appears to cater more to Mexican, Canadian and U.S. families, rather than to cruise ship customers. It is well located on the water, about a MX$150 taxi ride to San Miguel. Our two sons and I stayed four nights in three first floor rooms by the pool facing the Gulf. Because of my mobility issues, I had requested three rooms near each other on the first floor or close to an elevator. The hotel was not crowded; they assigned us rooms 103, 104 and 105 - all exceptional single/double rooms. Each was very spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable, and the walk-in showers were warm and spacious with grab bars and plenty of soap, shampoo and conditioner. Two of the rooms had convenient multi-plug surge protectors, one did not, requiring lengthy connections. Wifi was decent. The AC was loud but worked well. The patios were small but comfortable. Playa Azul has two swimming pools - one for small children. They are well maintained. We spent little time at the small beach. It was nice and sargassum free. It got rocky about 10 feet into the water. One son used a non-hotel dive shop for three days of scuba diving. The other son and I experienced lazy days at the tiki bar and the Playa Azul Beach Club. Both were great. Exceptional, friendly service. The beach club has an extensive, reasonably priced menu. We ate one evening meal at the hotel restaurant and three at various restaurants in San Miguel. All were high quality with fine food, wine and drinks. Excellent service. Playa Azul is a great choice if you are looking for a friendly, clean, secure, laid back environment. Staff, to a person, was welcoming and knowledgeable. Perhaps best of all is that the Playa Azul Hotel represents great value. Granted it appeared to be slow season, but we rented three excellent rooms for four nights for slightly less than US$1,200 all taxes and fees included. A Tip: You may find it helpful to book using the hotel's website. Again, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Playa Azul Hotel. Highly recommend.

Be aware
This is the first time I have stayed at this hotel, and the overall experience was poor! For the following reasons for the poor rating! This hotel has two buildings! One has an elevator, and the other doesn't ! Therefore, if your room is on the third floor, you must carry your bags up those stairs unless a hotel staff takes up for you! The room was large and clean and comfortable! However, we had a problem with the toilet two times and both times we thought it was fixed! You had to flush the toilet several times to get rid of the waste! The breakfast buffet was okay! The restaurant service was slow one night! The hotel needs painting on the exterior building! The furniture in the room needs updating! The hotel has a very small beach with lots of rocks! The staff were friendly and helpful! Theirs not much near the hotel! The hotel has a restaurant with a limited menu! Theirs two restaurants across the street from the hotel! The pool area was okay! The cost from the airport to the hotel is $300.00 pesos or $20.00! The cost for a taxi to centro (downtown) is $150.00 pesos or $10.00! The last thing is that the water coming out of the faucet is yellow! I recommend using bottle water to brush your teeth!

Great Trip to Playa Azul
Had a wonderful 5 night stay at Playa Azul. Easy to see why they have so many repeat customers. The rooms were huge (jr. Suite 210) very cold A/C which made for great sleeping. Fabulous snorkeling right off the beach. Great beach walk available to the north. Amazing sunsets, nice pool. Staff was always helpful and gracious. Dive shop on site, beach club on site. Included breakfast was very good, make your own chillaquiles, made to order omelets, fresh fruit, pastries, scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, pancakes or French toast, different every day. Coffee was good, service awesome. Ate a couple of dinners at restaurant, mostly all good. Good appetizers for beach snacks, great 2 for 1 special drinks each day. Great TV with internet streaming channels. The beds were a little hard, but tolerable. 3 restaurants right across the street, also an ATM across street (could have skipped the line at the airport) Spa on site, great value for a great massage. Always cabs available, $10 to downtown. plenty of beach loungers by pool and beach. Hope to return soon!

Do not come for lunch
We have stayed in the hotel twice in the past. Today we went only for lunch but the receptionist insisted of charging us 500 pesos per person " to visit las instalaciones" and get food credit. We told him that we know the hotel and that we want lunch only. We were not allowed in . Total business nonsense. They call it "politica de la casa". Saturday May 10, 3 pm

Great hotel experience, best location
This hotel is our favorite! It is very low key, open air. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Our room was comfortable with great air conditioning. The beach is steps away from your room, and the water is clean, warm and safe to swim/float. The views of the sunset are spectacular. It's very easy to get a cab to take you to town/restaurants. The front desk will arrange any kind of tour you like. We asked for a car/driver to take us around the island one day. Restaurant food was great, we ate most of our meals here. We will always stay here when we visit Cozumel!
