Riu Dunamar - Family Group trip (kids 5 to 15) - December 2026
Group of 19 family members (10 adults, 9 kids ages 5–15), booked with a travel agent through Sunwing. Wednesday arrival, December 17, 2025. Arrival: Baggage took about 20–30 minutes. Airport wasn’t very busy. Transfers: Private Nexus bus included in the package. Super clean, air-conditioned, and comfortable. Finding the bus took a minute, but nothing stressful. Check-in: Late Wednesday afternoon, lobby was quiet and check-in was quick. Rooms: Partial ocean view rooms had a surprisingly good ocean view. We faced the courtyard and could see the main stage area from the balcony. Our family of five used two rooms: one king with pull-out (1 adult, 2 kids aged 10 & 12) and one room with two “double” beds (1 adult, 1 teen). Important note: the double beds are SMALL. Two adults would not be happy. Rooms were clean and simply decorated. Bar was well stocked and we started with two large bottles of water. Blackout curtains were excellent. Heads-up: hallways echo like crazy. Kids are loud everywhere. We brought noise machines and earplugs and slept fine. You can hear entertainment until about 11pm in partial ocean view rooms, but it’s well muffled with doors closed. Food: Our whole group really liked the food. Tons of options and something for everyone. We tried the Asian restaurant (decent) and the steakhouse (meh), but preferred the buffet, especially with kids. No reservations at the restaurants. For big groups, go just before 6pm when the a la cartes open, as lines form quickly. Dinner buffet runs until 10pm and you can bring food back to your room. No room service. Pool grill serves burgers and snacks when the lunch buffet is closed. If you have a sensitive stomach, be careful with sugary drinks plus heat plus Mexican food. That combo took me out for 24 hours. My fault, not the food. After that I lived happily on H2O mojitos (no alcohol). Trust me 😉 We didn’t drink tap water, used bottled water for brushing teeth, but did use ice and were totally fine. Beach: Great beach with lots of chairs. No umbrellas, but plenty of palm trees for shade. Drink service on the beach. Waves were strong during our stay. Super fun, but you need to be cautious. Not recommended to go past the main break with kids under 10 unless one-on-one and strong swimmers. Even as a strong swimmer, there were days I couldn’t safely manage both myself and my 10-year-old at once. Younger kids loved playing closer to shore. Some seaweed, but not bad. And no, we did not see any of the “poop” people love to complain about. Kids Pool Area: Fantastic, especially for kids 11 and under. Very clean since no food or drinks are allowed. Slides are height-based and rules are enforced. These slides are fast and steep, and the water at the bottom is deeper than expected. Service: Excellent overall. Special shout-out to Gustavo at the beach bar. Absolute legend. Remembered our names and drinks and always came back quickly. Entertainment: This was our biggest disappointment, especially for teens. There’s not much for under-18s beyond the kids club, a band or video concert, and a show. Only one dance party per week and a silent disco once every two weeks (which we missed). Our 13- and 15-year-olds loved the Neon party but wished there was more nightlife. A simple DJ dance slot between kids club and adult shows would be an easy win. Staff told us teens aren’t really their target audience, which was unfortunate given how many multi-age families were there. Highlights we loved as a group: Kahoot nights and Karaoke (arrive early and download the Karafun app ahead of time). Younger kids also loved the Riuland shows, especially when they could participate. Departure: Checkout was fast. We confirmed our bus time with reps by the main stage. Important: airport Wi-Fi was HORRIBLE. Visitax is $17.75 per person. They are checking. If you get lucky and slip through, great, but if not, paying on the spot with no internet is stressful. Pay it in advance and bring PRINTED QR codes. I got stopped without mine accessible and only got waved through because the rest of our group had proof. The departure area is excellent: tons of shopping, duty-free, and food options (airport prices apply, obviously). Overall: Great resort for families with younger kids and large groups. Solid food, great service, and a beautiful beach. Add a bit more teen-friendly evening entertainment and this place would be close to perfect. *It's not party resort, if that is what you are looking for, or looking to avoid.

FANTASTIC
Thank you, Riu Dunamar! My wife and I have been loyal Riu fans for a very long time, and Riu Dunamar did not disappoint. We’ve stayed at most of the properties in the area, including the Palace resorts, and Riu Dunamar is truly a hidden gem. The food, service, beach, and rooms were all fantastic. The service around the pool bars was absolutely incredible—hands down the fastest service we’ve ever experienced. Special thanks to Max Steel, Jerry, Angel, Memo, and the rest of the team for making our stay unforgettable. We will 100% be back to this property in the future. Thanks again, Rick Bush

Highly recommend.
The staff were all very accommodating and very nice. We had our favourite servers who were very nice and friendly and made us laugh each day. My granddaughter had a wonderful time while she was. She wished they had more celiac friendly food but for the most part she had a great time. Highly recommend and I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Weather Related Early Arrival
We needed to quickly rearrange our trip to arrive one day early due to weather predictions and flight cancellations.

Great staff and food, but noisy room
We have been to Rius before and enjoyed the same quality food and friendly staff and nice rooms. Our only complaint was that we are seniors and we ended up right over the entertainment stage and a room very far from an elevator so the stairs to the 2nd floor (which is really the 3rd floor) were very challenging for us. While hubby slept ok, i found the noise level very challenging to sleep, so would recommend this location for folks who like to stay up late and party. It was consistently loud until 11:30 or 12 every night and the White Party Wed night we had vibrations in our room. Still a good time walking the beach, aquafit, etc.
