    Not quite 5 stars

It's a pity that, once a hotel has been awarded 5 stars, a star cannot be removed, for in our opinion, this hotel is not worthy of the 5 stars it displays above its entrance nor of the 5 star prices it charges. It is trying to be two hotels in one - 'preferred club' and 'others' with the result that the 'others' are treated as second class. The hotel is excellently situated (which is why we chose it) between the main street and the beach. We could not fault our reception at Villamil - we were offered a drink and escorted to our room and later brought water and biscuits. Nor could we fault our room itself - it was of good size with an excellent bathroom and balcony and with plenty of storage space and kept very clean by our pleasant chambermaid. The pool was clean but the area around it suffered from an excess of pigeon poo and the waitresses in the poolside cafe were reluctant to serve us. It was in the dining area that the cracks began to show! Everyone was 'encouraged' to sit outside on the balcony but, as we were not keen to share our food with the resident pigeons and many small birds, we wished to stay inside only to find that the tables were laid for breakfast rather than dinner. The staff seemed poorly trained and did not seem to have a serving system - they did not know how to correctly lay a table nor that hot water was needed to make tea along with the teabag! The food was disappointing. Many less exotic hotels have provided a better range of cereals for example. And, although side dishes at breakfast were hot, the side dishes at dinner although kept in the same area, were invariably cold. The show cooking was chaotic with 'orders' frequently getting mixed up. We expected a higher standard for the price we paid. We're not just nitpicking here. We have travelled all over the world and stayed in many kinds of hotels some of which were Hyatt brand but we were disappointed that the Villamil, for all its pretentions, didn't quite make the grade.

A really lovely break in a lovely Hotel.

It was lovely to come back to this hotel, it had been many years since i had been & things had changed, but for the better. Adults only, great food at mealtimes & great entertainment at nights. I found the other guests very sociable. The room was really nice, the staff were so kind & couldn't do enough for you. The Hotel is central & lots of little shops & cafes outside. I'm really pleased I came back.

    Annual holiday.

Another fantastic holiday at the Villamil. A hotel that just keeps giving. Brilliant location, staff and service, our welcome on arrival was genuinely warm and professional. Too many to name individually, but special mention to Monika, Guest Relations Manager, under whose guidance nothing seems to be too much trouble. To others, German, Pedro, Gorge and Christina in the Piano Bar, where the nightly entertainment is provided, finishing responsibly and in consideration of all guests at 10:30. Hardeep in the Seaside Grill, quietly gets on with things providing a wonderful dining experience. In the Olio Jesus and all the girls continue to serve great food always with a smile. So, the Villamil occupying an old building has its idiosyncrasies, but surely that’s part of the charm. It certainly is for us. Great to catch up with friendships made in the years gone by meeting folks who continue to return. Must be doing something right, we’ll be back next year. Thank you everyone at the Villamil.

Not as described and falls well short of images. NOT 5 *

I’m sure the VILLAMIL was great in its heyday positioned well to all amenities and on a lovely shallow bay of soft sand. Now it’s designed to maximise its financial potential. Our room was very nice compared to where you could end up. The view out over our balcony was pretty but that’s where it ended. The stage was right under our balcony. The evening entertainment was 3 * at best. The theme of entertainment never changed it was high energy every act was the same. Room 207 and 24 other rooms would have been subjected to the volume coming from the large speakers. The choice of entertainment was wholly unsuitable of a professed high end hotel with the demographics. We tried to move but the replacement was worse and still in the noise range. It would be difficult to escape because at the far end of the bay it could still be heard. The Prefered Club is an after thought crammed in small areas of the hotel. Service was hit and miss. At breakfast staff would be chatting while cereal bowls, coffee mugs, spoons etc would run out. Chipped mugs, I’ve never seen mugs used at any 5 * hotels I’ve been to. I’m familiar with the Hyatt group and this hotel seriously lets the brand down. As for Peguera its Main Street is lined with fast food eateries and cheap tacky shops.

    3 star maximum

From the start our impressions weren’t great. We pulled up in our car but no one came out to help with our bags or offer to valet park the car. We then got ourselves to reception where there was no greeting or welcome words; in fact, the reception staff looked like they couldn’t find our reservation as they madly tapped away on the keyboard. Not a great start. The room and bathroom was decidedly 3 star. Old and tired. Beware the beach is like Benidorm. Jam packed. The hotel is surrounded by noisy bar/restaurants and behind by a road full of supermarkets and souvenir tat shops. All in all the experience was nothing like the hotel website would have left you expecting. We won’t be back.
