    Nice room, but that was about it

    We went to Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort earlier this month. This was our fourth all-inclusive resort we have visited together, but regrettably, it was our least favorite. Pros: - The room was clean, spacious, and well attended by housekeeping. - The dinners were generally good. Portofino was our favorite. - Coco Cafe was actually great, friendly staff and great food/drink. It's pretty funny how many other reviews call out this coffee shop as a highlight of the resort, since everyone is going to Cabo for the coffee. Cons: - Preferred Club provided no real benefits other than a second pool. If you wanted to go out of your way to the Preferred Club, you could get a premium mixed drink. Oddly, the second pool had only basic mixed drinks. Despite having Preferred Club status, we were unable to get a reservation at the hibachi dinner, and were harassed with timeshare sales tactics. - Drinking was just not fun. It frequently seemed like the staff was annoyed to take drink orders. We once waited 20 minutes at the swim-up bar to get drinks. On top of that, the drinks were extremely weak. I did not have a buzz at any point in my stay, which I've never said about an all-inclusive hotel before. - Breakfast was awful. Parts of the buffet were really unappealing. The cheese display was completely wet. When we went to the Preferred Club breakfast, service was great, but the food wasn't much better. Hash browns were cold. I guess lunches were okay. - There is no shade at either of the swimming pools. Some of the guests were moving umbrellas at one of the pools to create shade. Or maybe they were just trying to shield themselves from the iguana poop dropping into the pool from the palm trees above. We are all-inclusive veterans but something about this resort was just not right. Maybe there is a lower bar for this hotel since so many spend time in Cabo San Lucas or on excursions? For us, on top of the disappointing food, drink, and service, we paid far more to come to Secrets than we would have paid for a comparable resort in Cancun. Next time, I think we'll be on the other Gulf.

    Fantastic

    We had an absolutely amazing time celebrating my husbands 40th birthday at Secrets! One of our biggest highlights was Christian and the Restaurant Portofino! He made our meal so memorable and made sure we had the best on the menu!

    Good place to relax

    Been to a few all inclusive resorts in Cabo but never tried a Secrets before so gave it a shot since they were now connected to Hyatt. Overall the wife and I had a good time there and got to sit by the pool or over-looking the ocean and relax, drink, eat, and catch-up on our reading. I would say Secrets is a good above-average A.I. establishment (not exceptional but better than mid), except for their staff... the staff was EXCEPTIONAL... everyone smiling, happy, lots of people employed there and they did a great job at keeping grounds looking good (Even after a storm), keeping room clean, and helping bring our food/drinks when requested. Pros: * Staff - see above, exceptional! They also drove around and gave people lifts in golf carts if necessary (we didn't partake, but cool option) * Preferred Club Pool - we definitely preferred this over the main pool (quieter) * Shower pressure - better than most hotels * Hibachi restaurant - requires reservations and it was worth it, by far the best meal and most entertaining * Theme meal days - Mexican theme w/ mariachi and Asada w/ fire-dancers were the 2 we participated in and it was just nice to have other food options (meat at the Asada theme day was excellent) * Tried the Tequila tasting event offered one day and that was fun. * Toiletries were provided (lotion, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, etc). I could have saved myself some packing. Still need to bring your own sunscreen. Cons: * bit more flies in general outside than I would have preferred (not inside or in the restaurants). But on the plus, never saw a single mosquito (had mosquito bracelets on but still never saw any) * drinks have to be pretty watered down... had many fruit theme vacation drinks and others and never got a buzz once. Empty calories. * Food was just okay. Breakfast buffet was on-par with what you'd expect, lunch was nothing memorable (tried a few of their options), and we tried Portofino (Italian) and Himitsu for 2 nights (with and without Hibachi). Neither of us cared for the Italian food options (don't have traditional menu items), but we also don't eat seafood so that cut down many of the options. Also had to wait 30min for each restaurant despite going at 6:30 and 7pm. I think for me its the cheese they use in Mexico doesn't agree with my taste buds. * Coffee/Cafe available was good for my wife to just get a tea but I tried a strawberry smoothie and a hot chocolate and separate occasions and didn't like the taste of either (different chocolate maybe and I don't know what the strawberry smoothie was made out of but I tossed the whole thing). * Bed - I couldn't sleep well and it made noise when you turned almost like there was plastic underneath the sheets (every time one of us turned it woke the other up). It looked nice but I wasn't comfortable. Overall we had a good time, tried to do the spa but they were booked on the dates we wanted (so can't describe that). Grounds were lovely/clean, pool area clean, staff attentive and kind, bathrooms were well laid out, elevators worked quickly, and no issues getting lounge chairs (we did go down early 7-730 am to reserve) because we wanted a specific area/chair but otherwise no issues.

    Second Trip to Secrets Loas Cabos.

    This was our second trip to this all inclusive resort. See my previous review. This trip was every bit as enjoyable as the first, in spite of enduring Hurricane Priscilla on Monday and Tuesday. The staff did an amazing job keeping us fed and comfortable during the storm, even though they were short handed since many of their employees could not get to the resort after Sunday. But by Wednesday, all things returned to normal. Even if you do not want a great golf outing, this is a great resort, staffed by wonderful people, for rest and relaxation with no real worries. All my comments in the previous review are still applicable.

    TERRIBLE….

    We always stay at Secrets Hyatt in Akumal and LOVE it there!! Top notch and amazing service every single time. We’ve taken friends and family when we’ve gone in the past. This October, our friends wanted to go to Cabo. We’ve never stayed in Cabo Secrets Hyatt Puerto Los Cabos. We’ve always stayed elsewhere but thought we’d try Secrets Cabo since we love Secret Hyatt in Akumal so much. As soon as we checked in, we had a warm greeting. Once we checked, it changed quickly. Note: when I checked out after my stay, l was asked about my stay…. I calming explained the following complaints to him and he said sounds like it was poor communication. We will strive to make this better as this isn’t our standards. We strive to be higher than that. I went to say a couple of things in addition to miscommunication… so much more. He said hope to see you again. Rudely. Areas that lacked all week —- Pool area: -We couldn’t use ALL of the pool areas. We didn’t know the preferred club could only use all the pool facilities or we would have booked that PC. Ocean View Swim Out: We already upgraded to a swim out with ocean view—- which did NOT have an ocean view by the way! Grass and sand piled up past the lawn area, where we couldn’t see the ocean at all. We much rather had upgraded to the preferred club instead of the swim out in building 5! Plus, all the other guest staying in building 5 next to us would swim in our area and not allow us a little privacy in our own area! Frustrating so we got out of our swim out! Beach: Your online website states you have beach access but beach area is not swimable. You even have photos of the beach to walk along the area. We met a lady that was here two years ago and she said you didn’t have a beach then either! It’s false advertisement. We wanted the beach to walk along when we booked. Your APP for the resort: We were told this is how we navigate your stay. Use this APP. -to make Reservations - must use the app but it was not working! Not the entire stay. Other guests said the same this. None of us (8) couldn’t make restaurant reservations, choose a Bali bed, etc. We were told to make restaurant reservations 24 hours in advance on the app. Out of the 4 couples, friends we brought, none of our apps worked in one way or another. Talked to concierge several times about this issue, they told me to go to the restaurant and personally talk to them the day before we wanted to dine to personally make our reservations for 8. Went to the restaurant 24 hrs in advance, the hostess said they couldn’t help me at all. I have to go to concierge if my app wasn’t working. She asked me if I was a Preferred Guest, which I wasn’t, she said she couldn’t help me. So, no help there! Everyone refused to help with dinner reservations. We had to do our own leg work. Wait in long lines for a table 3 times during the week. When your staff said they would call us back to try to help, they told me they’d call me right back on my phone in my room, not my cell phone. I waited in my room for nothing. Never a call back! Wasted time, again!! None of your restaurants took a table of 8 so we were not able to eat together. They all said we can do tables of 4. Also, most restaurants took 2.5 hours to serve dinner — slow service and terrible to refill your drinks during your meal. We had to flag them down to get a refill and ask how much longer till our meal will be served. Entertainment: No nightly entertainment at the pool area. We saw the burlesque show inside the conf room but the show wasn’t great. They didn’t offer much entertainment all week, except for one night on the lawn. The Mexican Theme night. One night all they offered was karaoke night in the bar. Bar At Pool: Bar at the pool (during the day) was not 100% fully open, only 2 days all week- only one side of the bar (had to get out to walk around to the bar, then get back in the pool). Ridiculous. Seaside Grill: No food at the seaside grill for 2 and half days - closed. We had to get out of the pool, go find food since they weren’t serving food, only drinks. Terrible customer service. Drinks: Adult beverages/Alcohol drinks were terrible, none of them were the same even if you ordered the same drink all day in different areas. They were weak or tasted funny…. “Flat” soda drinks. Nothing tasted right. Bought a cup at the gift shop after receiving our drinks by the pool in a cloudy, dirty cup. Made me think they weren’t clean thoroughly. Room service: We pre-ordered room service for breakfast at 8:30am to be delivered. After not sleeping much, we got up early so we called room service to see if we could cancel our room service as we would just dine with our friends. We called, they said they delivered it at 7:30am this morning. We never got it! They must of delivered to the wrong room. We ordered late night snack the night before since we didn’t eat much that day. This was on Monday night. Room service was fine but they didn’t pick up our dishes until Wednesday morning— 2 days later!!! We even called to ask them to pick up the dishes, they still did not pick them up the following day! This is unacceptable. Gross! Staff: The staff was overloaded I guess - service was slow everyday — not enough staff to support the crowd of guests. They tried to accommodate but seemed like they only catered to the large birthday party or the large wedding party! Everyone else had to wait. Shuttle: We paid in advance for our round-trip shuttle to/from airport/resort, when we booked our vacation through transcabo. We met and confirmed our shuttle pick up time 2 days before of departure. We confirmed the time for all of our friends. Our friends got picked up on time. Our shuttle never arrived! When no one showed up, I marched to the transcabo office. She said not to worry. I said, ‘we need to go to the airport now, we are late!’ She asked my name and then said someone will be right here. I waited about 5 mins, and she came over and said they’ll be here. She was panicking- she said ‘I’m sorry’ over and over. Another 5 mins, she got a hotel suburban to take us to the airport. She must of mistakenly canceled our shuttle when our other friends confirmed their ride. Refrigerator: Refrigerator in our room never worked. Warm temp. We told concierge office/lobby and they told me maintenance will be there in a little while. No one came. Overall: The resort had a ton of miscommunication issues, not following through with guests, lack of hospitality (meaning guests do all the leg work), APP issues, lack of service, and only catered to Preferred Guests, 2 wedding parties and big Birthday Group. We paid for our trip too. You should never discriminate if we aren’t a Preferred Guest. We felt unimportant and like we were a nuisance. Pros: -the room was very nice/clean. We appreciate cleanliness. -the spa was amazing. Massage was fabulous! I normally do not complain in writing but this is warranted.
