    A Superb Holiday

What a superb experience! A big thanks to Bernard and Eddie and the management team at the hotel. And to Kenton, Ornella and Maddie at the Azul restaurant. Also to Dawn at the Portofino Restaurant as well Jordania at the Buffet. Our modern and spacious room with the swim up pool, as well the superb view of Maho Bay, along with the numerous great pools coupled with the very modern fitness centre and good food all led to a great time. Kudos to all of you and we look forward to seeing you again next year! John and Bobbie

    Great time had by all!

This place is fantastic, our stay was so much fun. The staff are friendly and very accommodating. Kenton, Dawn and the staff at Azul went above and beyond. Our servers, Shenille and Mickeey (sorry, I'm not sure of the spelling) were awesome. Such a joy to see them every day. The food at Azul and Portofino is outstanding. The room was comfortable and clean and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. My only negative comment is that the beach is not at the hotel, but that's not their fault. Thank you for making our trip a real joy.

Mixed bag highlighted by great butler Vigillio

This was an interesting one. My wife and I stayed at Sonesta Ocean Point because a work conference was being held there. Some of my opinion on the property is based on our preferences for warm weather vacations, namely that we are beach people. If you are beach people SOP is really not for you. Maho is fun for an hour maybe, to experience the whole planes thing, but then the wind and noise and fact the hotel has no chairs on the beach gets old pretty quick. Mullet bay is a short walk away (about 5-10 minutes once outside the resort) and is quite nice, set in a gorgeous white sand bay. It gets pretty busy, but there are several places to rent chairs and they just set up additional rows when it gets crowded. $30 for two chairs and an umbrella for the day. While Mullet is nice, I would never choose an all inclusive resort to have to walk to a beach and pay for chairs, especially after having had a few days staying in an air bnb prior to checking into SOP where we drove ourselves to the most beautiful beaches of the island on the French side and paid $20 for the same chairs (at one place that even included a drink each). That experience prior to checking into SOP also impacted our opinion of the food. We were obviously spoiled by the incredible restaurants throughout the island prior to checking into SOP. Once at the resort we only ate at Azul, which is supposed to be the gem of the property food wise. Overall I would give the food at Azul maybe a 7/10 on an adjusted all inclusive food meter. We had just been to a Majestic (upper midrange hotel) in Costa Mujeres for Christmas with the kids and I would say the food was better overall at Majestic. At Azul some things were quite good, but others were decidedly low brow for the price point of this resort (for example the “green salad” lettuce was not much above the lettuce used in Subway sandwiches). If you wanted lobster or a tomahawk steak it was a $70 surcharge. Keep in mind these things are included in similarly priced resorts we have stayed at in the past (the Excellence family of resorts comes to mind). The service in Azul was quite friendly, but very informal. The servers joke around with you and are very familiar with you which I don’t mind but some might not enjoy. The only pool we used (being beach people) is right outside Azul I forget what it’s called. It’s a natural looking pool with a fake beach looking over the cliff. We used this one because it has no swim up bar (those are not our style we are chill as opposed to party people) and because we had a swim out room that connects to it. This pool is really nice, but not huge. None of the pools on property are large. Turning to the room we had what I think is called a sunset swimout butler suite, one of the highest room classes at the resort. The room was in decent condition, but lacked some things you would expect like usb ports in the nightstand areas. The view from these rooms is amazing, but you need to keep in mind that they open on a shared pool, so you don’t have any privacy in the room with the blinds open. I was reminded of this one morning when the pool maintenance person appeared on our patio while I was changing. If you want that sunset ocean view I would probably choose one of the upper floor rooms in that building which also come with butler service. Speaking of which, the butler service we had was the highlight of our stay, probably the first time I’ve said that as normally they are a pretty useless glorified concierge. I don’t do “shoutout” reviews naming employees at resorts normally, but I would not be giving a proper review of our time without mentioning how amazing Vigillio (“V”) was. Little things like refreshing our ice bucket in the room when he knew we were coming back from the beach shortly, to leaving a fruit plate and cheese and crackers when he had been asked to draw a bath for my wife while we were out on resort, to packing us a lunch and drinks in a cooler when we were headed out to a beach for the day, to ensuring maintenance dealt with an issue we had with our room, to seeing my CPAP machine on the nightstand and saying he could get me distilled water for it without being asked . He told us he could also reserve day beds and cabanas on property for us but we didn’t take advantage of this feature. He was amazing and I can’t say enough about what a proactive and helpful guy he was. I probably would never stay at SOP again, because the price point is high and I would rather stay at a non AI and eat where I want and go to the beaches I want as my St Martin experience at that price point. If I was craving the AI experience (staying in an insulated environment with decent food and a nice beach) I would go somewhere else (like the Excellence chain or for a less fancy experience the Majestic chain). But if I was ever to come back to SOP I would 100 percent request to be in a room serviced by Vigillio. Happy to answer any question about the property you may have.

    Great employees make the trip.

Beautiful grounds and accommodations. Most importantly some amazing employees. Janeil, Smiley and Kemiara were all sincere in their excitement for our trip with lots of personality and great service. Truly seemed to enjoy themselves while providing exceptional service. Great food, perfect drinks, stunning pools and views. Pizza.. so good. This was the adults only side, wasn't crowded. Family side,.. not so much.

    Best of the caribbean

Been travelling the caribbean for 23 + years. I can honestly say these are some of the best views anywhere. This hotel has THE location on the island. The food at Azul restaurant is 5 star. Rinayyah gave great service every day. Remi remembered where we liked to sit, our names and what we drank everyday. The GM , although new, is making a difference in making the property a 5 star all-around jewel. We plan to go back in 3 months..........it's that special of a place.
