Beautiful views but far from five star standards

This hotel has plenty of potential, but unfortunately, our stay fell well short of five-star expectations. While there are some lovely aspects, too many things need improvement. The positives: The rooms are spacious, nicely furnished and offer gorgeous views. Most staff were friendly and accommodating. The beach is just a one-minute boat trip across the marina, and kayaking and paddle boarding are included in your stay, which are great touches. Smart TVs were also a bonus. However, despite opening within the last few years, the hotel feels surprisingly dated. The bathrooms are outdated, with no proper window, just a wooden shutter. Cleanliness was a real concern. Our bathroom was dirty on arrival and on our first night, while getting ready for bed, we found small flies and what appeared to be tiny centipedes on the bed. This was extremely unpleasant and not what you would expect from a hotel of this standard. Both hairdryers in our room were broken. We requested a replacement and were told we would receive one when available. It arrived the following day, only for that one to be broken too. Housekeeping was inconsistent, and staff would often arrive at the room at inconvenient times, frequently around 7:45 pm while we were getting ready. There are no “Do Not Disturb” signs, and the turndown service was hit and miss. The TV was difficult to operate, often requiring multiple button presses, and the room telephone could receive calls but could not make outgoing calls. The food was average at best. Only three restaurants are included in the all-inclusive package, and the menus did not change, making meals repetitive over the course of a week. A couple of restaurants were closed on some days during our stay, further limiting the choice. Service at Hurricane Hole was extremely slow at both breakfast and dinner, with waits of over 45 minutes for a starter on some occasions. There was also a strong sewage-like smell, which made dining unpleasant. We were told dinner reservations had to be made every evening, yet bookings could not be made through the app. The concierge often took days to respond, despite the app advertising an average response time of five minutes. Whenever we visited the concierge desk, there was frequently nobody there. Information on the app also sometimes contradicted the daily printed updates. Sunbed service was available only twice during our entire week, meaning we usually had to go to the bar ourselves. The sunbeds were dirty, and the flooring around the pools looked as though it needed a thorough jet wash. The small pool with the fountain was particularly disappointing, as it was tiny and frequently full of dead flies and leaves. The beach had lots of sand flies, and at weekends, some local men approaching guests and shouting at them made the experience uncomfortable. Evening entertainment was very limited, consisting of a singer at 7 pm each night at restaurant 1461. After dinner, there was very little else to do, and the pool bar played the same pop playlist every day. There are no lifts, so be prepared for plenty of stairs. There is also very little to do outside the resort without arranging a transfer elsewhere. The souvenir shop was disappointing, with a limited selection and none of the basic items you might expect, such as magnets, lighters or bracelets. At check-in, we were shown to our room and offered a tour the following day, but were not given basic information such as where breakfast was served or what time the pool opened. The hotel delivers a daily information sheet with updates, which is a nice touch, but conflicting information between the leaflet and app often caused confusion. Despite its beautiful setting and some genuinely lovely staff, the hotel fell short in too many areas. For a property marketed as five-star, cleanliness, maintenance, dining variety and service consistency all need significant improvement. For us, one week was more than enough, and unfortunately, this did not feel like a five-star experience.

This is a good hotel which has the potential to be a great hotel

The setting on Marigot Bay on St Lucia is excellent. The accommodation blocks are largely wood framed and arranged up to three high on the southern side of the inlet in lush, well- kept grounds. There are no lifts on site so there are steps and this may prove to be a barrier to those with mobility issues. The free Wi-Fi works well throughout the resort. Our room air conditioning worked well and the room has been cleaned and turned down daily. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The resort is all inclusive and we found the quality of food to be excellent in all venues, though the range of well known drinks brands was very limited. So why isn't this a five star review? We had a number of niggles during our fourteen night stay, starting with check in when we were shown to the wrong room after dark and the female staff member went away to reprogramme the key and was never seen again. Not funny after a nine hour flight and you need the toilet. Kevin, who we subsequently learned works in the shop at Hurricane Hole, let us into the right room when he brought our bags. At check in we had been advised to attend an orientation meeting at 11am next morning. We did so promptly, but it was not until 11.20 that anyone showed up to conduct the tour. I expressed my frustration about the check in fiasco and tardiness of the orientation to someone from the reception team, who offered us two hours in the spa next day and Swedish massages were delivered by two very skilled ladies. So it continued with variable levels of service. Refills of the all inclusive minibar in the room were not automatic, with requests having to be made via the App. Sometimes these were fulfilled and sometimes they weren't and never at the time you have supposedly booked - with deliveries taking place from 7am in the morning to 9pm in the evening (when you might be asleep). Our room seemed to lack a "do not disturb" sign. Rohan in the restaurants, Rashida (1461, the Cove and Le Bateau), Karla (Rum Cave) and Markeem (Gym) were all attentive and made our stay special. Others were decidedly indifferent, although things improved during the latter part of our stay after I provided five A4 pages of detailed feedback to Philipp the General Manager on our trials and tribulations after a week and two days later tackled him about these in person having not had a reply. These resulted in a complementary meal at a la carte Driftwood and a private dining experience both of which were excellent. The resort looks tired and tatty in places for example: in our room one of the two hand basins was badly cracked, around the pool, on our balcony and on the ferry to the beach cushions were were torn and split, in public areas lights were out or flickering and the pool volleyball has lost its outer shell. During a heavy evening downpour I switched the outside lights that caused the lights in our bathroom and wardrobes to trip plunging us into darkness. This was reported to the concierge and the breaker reset in about 90 minutes. I was advised not to use the outside light…. In contrast the grounds and pools seem to be very well maintained and air conditioning, and the appliances in our room all worked. On one visit to the beach, which was very clean and good for snorkelling and one visit to the pool in the morning there were no complementary towels for up to an hour. Hyatt offer an App which acts as a guide to the hotel and its activities, restaurants and entertainment. During the orientation we were advised that the menus are updated at 11pm each day, but I never noticed any change in the menus during our stay. I found it frustrating that the app lacked the ability to book a table and that all bookings require a call or a visit to the concierge. The app does offer the ability to provide feedback on different aspects of our stay, but there is a 250 character limit. The hotel also provides a daily paper guide to the same things, but I noticed that often times varied between the two. I have a dairy allergy and this was notified to our tour company (TUI) 146 days in advance of our stay, was well accommodated by British Airways, but this seemed to be a revelation to staff at the resort. Staff have clearly been trained to ask about allergies, at pretty much every meal, and the kitchen staff were excellent at omitting dairy products from dishes, but serving staff continually served bread with butter and not margarine. Every day almond milk had to be asked for at breakfast, yet in most UK hotels a dairy free alternative is just available as a matter of course. My biggest frustration in this regard was the Coco Café at Hurricane Hole. This offers a super range of cakes and ice creams, but not one dairy free or vegan cake. Over fourteen days I repeatedly asked the question about the availability of a dairy free or vegan cake, but was continually disappointed. I’ve provided feedback verbally and via the Hyatt App, but nothing changed. Sometimes a pretty tasteless an alarmingly fluorescent green lemon sorbet has been available, but that was all. What I found particularly frustrating about this was that the staff were capable of producing excellent dairy free deserts. One day Rohan presented me with three excellent strawberry tarts and on other occasions "special" deserts were prepared for me at The Rum Cave, Driftwood and the private dining experience. The programme of activities is low key. Some need to be booked, but take up in the low season was low. I attended an aquafit session with Markeem who was very good. He noticed an old shoulder injury and encouraged me to visit the gym for some exercises to help with this and I took him up on this offer in the following days. I found his approach to be friendly, helpful, encouraging and beneficial. The resort does have programme of excursions, at premium prices, if you ask the concierge. We attended the full day Bean to Bar tour which as excellent in all respects and for the first time we felt like valued customers. We later found that there is a local tour company just outside the Hurricane Hole which offers a similar range at more competitive prices and can also arrange taxis for you. Overall we had a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday, but felt that we had to fight hard to get a four star experience.

    Tranquil stay

This is a wonderful hotel, beautiful setting, staff went above and beyond. This is a peaceful, relaxing hotel. There is nothing to do outside the hotel, no other restaurants or bars to visit, no where to walk to, so if your looking for something lively this is not the place for you but if tranquility is what your after I would definitely recommend

    Travel Agent Review

Horrible! Definitely not a 5 star resort. More like 2 star. Quick run down….roaches in rooms and dining areas. Cats running around dining areas. Small dated rooms. No ventilation or air in bathrooms. No elevators (even with rooms kn the. 22/23 floor requiring multiple steep hill climbs and multiple flights of stairs). Extremely limited food options and restaurants. Food that was available was definitely subpar. 2 very small pools. No entertainment extra resort employee singing 1 night at dinner. Best part of this resort is the Spa. That was great. Otherwise—dont waste your money! Zoetry is the Carnival of the all inclusive Caribbean!
